[Verse 1]
You got a fast car
And I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere
Any place is better
Startin' from zero, got nothin' to lose
Maybe we'll make something
Me, myself, I got nothin' to prove
[Verse 2]
You got a fast car
And I got a plan to get us out of here
I've been workin' at the convenience store
Managed to save just a little bit of money
Won't have to drive too far
Just across thе border and into the city
And you and I can both get jobs
Finally see what it mеans to be livin'
[Verse 3]
See, my old man's got a problem
He live in the bottle, that's the way it is
He said his body's too old for working
His body's too young to look like his
So Mama went off and left him
She wanted more from life than he could give
I said, somebody's got to take care of him
So I quit school and that's what I did
[Pre-Chorus]
You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so we can fly away?
Still gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way
[Chorus]
So I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us and your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I, I, had a feeling that I belonged
I, I, had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
[Verse 4]
You got a fast car
We go cruising and entertain ourselves
You still ain't got a job
So I work in the market as a checkout girl
I know things will get better
You'll find work and I'll get promoted
And we'll move out of the shelter
Buy a bigger house, live in the suburbs
[Chorus]
Said I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us and your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I, I, had a feeling that I belonged
I, I, had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
[Verse 5]
You got a fast car
I got a job that pays all our bills
You stay out drinking late at the bar
See more of your friends than you do your kids
I'd always hoped for better
Thought maybe together you and me would find it
I got no plans, I ain't goin' nowhere
Take your fast car and keep on driving
[Chorus]
So I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us and your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I, I, had a feeling that I belonged
I, I, had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
[Instrumental Break]
[Outro]
You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so we can fly away?
Still gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way

And it's very common for an artist to change the words so they make sense with respect to the singer's gender, for instance, just as Joplin did when she covered Kristofferson. Don't remember reading that he sued her for making Bobby McGee a guy...

My dad passed away from cancer a few weeks back. I dropped out of college to take care of him. Was a drinker growing up, only saw him on the weekends. I'd never thought I'd hear something that so perfectly encapsulated the last few years of my life in so few words. Can't tell you how many times I wished I could've left the situation, and I almost wish I could have it back. Can't stop crying to this song, damn it.

Fell in love with this somg in a dark place in my life after my mom died. Someone started playing this cover at work a couple weeks ago and have absolutely loved hearing it in the musical landscape again. Thanks for doing such a phenomenal job with this song, Luke.

He did great with the wonderful Tracy's amazingly poignant song. I love that he didn't really tweak it. It works very well across genres, just as it is. Smart.

Listening to this song when I was a kid, I never realized how sad it really is, with her boyfriend ending being a degenerate drunk just like her dad. Such a powerful song, and a really beautiful rendition by Luke Combs. I love it.

I left a video from a "Liberal" site about this. They were talking shit about appropriations. I find this version to be so respectful of what Tracy did. He nailed it and barely changed it. He appreciated the song as the masterpiece that it was. I'm not mad about this. He did the song justice.

Just a friendly reminder, if you’re in an abusive relationship with someone, you have choice. Don’t ever feel like you’re stuck and have no way out. If leaving is what it takes, do it. Also, seek help: family member, friend, or even the cops.

The only lyric change in the song is a subtle but powerful one. "Still gotta make a decision" versus the original "We gotta make a decision" Showing that two generations later, this songs original message is still felt and lived by too many of us.

One of the best songs ever written, IMHO. I’ve forgotten a lot over the years, but I’ll never forget the first time I saw Tracy open for 10,000 Maniacs. The expression “You could hear a pin drop” is way way overused. In this case, you could’ve heard a pin drop. The audience was witnessing an incredible talent for the first time.
