A wonderful video. Thank you so much. We were so used to seeing Hodgey as the elder statesman/general/leader that we forget how tough and explosive and brilliant he was in his younger years. A timely reminder. Thank you.

You can see the sheer joy in how Luke played early in his career. Found time, the balance and steps of a dancer, eyes always on the posts ... and how did he kick goals from those distances so reliably ? Dunno, but so very proud that he was one of ours. Always "The General".

I would like to have seen Hodge play his entire career as a midfielder-forward.

Clarko spoke to him at one point and said he could continue as a midfield star or win his team some premierships from defence. The rest is history.

No he isn’t 😂what? Judd buddy Ablett dusty danger are all better. He’s just a great heart and soul player and the best leader of this era, he didn’t have the talent as the other guys I just mentioned nor the individual accolades

@@obi-nine1504 Hodge didn't need fancy footwork ect he was a true champion this is just his best goals! Hodge had what all the others didn't?? A brain full of understanding the game but mostly he new the opposistions game styles, who to shut down, told players were to run one way and him the other to cover any leaks in backline! Don't forget he was a pure midfielder but was so smart played half back and controlled the game! Judd dusty Dangerfield just break lines and hit targets better than any BUT they did not have brain's! And Hodge broke lines controlled the backline played midfield kicked goals he did it all and was TUFF AS NAILS! He is the best most valuable player of last 20 years ! If you were to pick a side to win cups Hodge is first easily! He was a complete player the others are just outstanding at one part of the game! Did danger dusty ect control a backline? Did they coach on the ground? Hodge best player last 20 years it's simply the truth!

@@mareewalker1096 i’m sorry but he’s not. doesn’t have the individual accolades to back that up. only 3 all australian’s and no brownlows or MVPs, when was he ever the best in the league. people overrated hodge as a player, he’s a gun but didn’t have the talent as other blokes did. he was tough player with beautiful skills but didn’t have the attributes that buddy juddy or gazza had etc. i can think of heaps of players easily better than hodge in the last 20 years. judd ablett goodes buddy voss hird buckley fyfe Dangerfield martin cousins black akermanis fevola brown pav selwood pendlbury etc. i don’t think you realise that most veteran defenders know how to run a backline and understand opponents game styles, what’s so special about hodge doing it?

I've heard the consensus is WCE Juddy was the better player but Hodgey had the better career and was the better leader. Some of these highlights I think he is close to being the best player of the draft too.

Judd was a superstar but hodgy was a CHAMPION! Judd had super talent but hodgy had talent and a super leader/captain! 2 best on ground in grand finals! This highlights reel is just the goals he kicked but he predominantly played at half back! There is many other videos showing his highlights of that part of his game! Any coach picking a team would have hodgy first over judd or any other player! Thats just a fact! Even sammy Mitchell was better than judd another CHAMPION! Brownlow medals dont mean shit! Ablett snr never won one or leigh matthews both the 2 greatest players to pull on a boot! Yes juddy was an explosive player and a fantastic player but when it comes to winning cups you need leaders and as many as you can get and judd was not one! Thats how you rate champions from skill and leadership! Judd was not a champion! So many would say thats wrong but it is the truth! Hodge was the best player of that draft by a long way! And the best player of that generation! He is the best footballer of the past 15 years! Period!

I forgot to mention how tuff he was as well! Spitting blood as you see in this video didn't render him off the ground you had to knock him out for him to leave the ground! What a player!

BADDAZZ GARAGE You think Sammy Mitchell was better than peak WCE Judd??
@jlrob85

BADDAZZ GARAGE Hodgey was the best champion and leader of that draft and one of the all time greats. Gary Ablett Jnr to me is the greatest individual player of all time.
