Luke Willis Thompson works across film, performance, installation and sculpture to tackle traumatic histories of class, racial and social inequality, institutional violence, colonialism and forced migration.
Following research into racialised stop-and-search policies and killings, Thompson’s silent black and white 16mm and 35mm films are performances by people fundamentally impacted by police and state brutality.

◾️BLACK PAIN IS NOT FOR PROFIT◾️ In response to the nomination of Luke Willis Thompson for the Turner Prize for his piece autoportait, BBZ London decided to take a symbolic stand at the Turner prize opening, alongside members of a community of artists of colour, against the utilisation of Black Death and Black pain by non-black artists and arts institutions for cultural and financial gain.

You should read his reasons for creating these works, and realise his own minority status. The works were created with the active participation and involvement of the subjects, in order to reclaim their identities from the mass media (mis)representations, giving them back their dignity and their individuality. it is banal to have knee-jerk response to not only the artist, but to the subjects, who you indirectly belittle.
