I feel like you characterized the game of change a little incorrectly. MSU students, players, coaches, and even the Dean all wanted to play in the tourney. But, there was an unwritten Mississippi law that prevented them from playing integrated teams. After reluctantly obliging for 2 straight seasons, the head coach had enough after his third straight SEC title. He snuck the team from Starkville to play in the tourney. I won't pretend they were saints. They were more fence sitters who wanted to play ball than actual civil rights activists wanting to dismantle segregation. But, I will say this video makes it seem like MSU as an institution refused to play, when in reality it was political pressure. And considering how little political power MSU has compared to Ole Miss, opposing this pressure was a big risk to take.

the reason why A&M was so adamant about letting texas in wasn’t because they were scared it was because when they joined the sec they made a deal that they would be the only texas team in the sec
@drhouse61655 сағат бұрын
Yeah and they made that deal out of fear of Texas
@nauticalfiction47955 сағат бұрын
@ no the deal was made because texas had a monopoly over the big 12 with the longhorn contract, forcing other teams to have to pay them to have the game against texas streamed. A&M left because texas was overcharging schools for the long horn network, now thankfully the sec didn’t allow the long horn network to work in the same way after they approved the transfer and it was failing anyways

Should’ve mentioned how Alabama’s comeback win over Florida in the inaugural Conference Championship Game saved all future Conf. Champ. Games. If Alabama had lost an extra conference game to Florida as a shoe-in for a bowl game with National Title implications, no team would have wanted to risk losing that opportunity in an extra conference game. All future conference championship games likely never would have come, likely never forming the BCS and similar systems. CFB would be completely different

I think black athletes in the SEC was a huge catalyst in getting the South to accept de-segregation. Once Southerns started seeing their favorite players of a different race playing, it busted open the door to equality. The SEC wouldn't be close to where it was today without all the black athletes, administrators, and coaches.

Alabama, more specifically Nick Saban, was why Missouri was in the SEC East. Auburn was willing to vacate its spot in the West for Mizzou. Saban whined and moaned about possibly not playing Tennessee every year because of the 6-1-1 format (Auburn would have become Alabama's permanent crossover), so he engineered Mizzou into the East. Auburn should have been in the East at first, because it played Florida, Georgia and Tennessee every year before 1992. It did not play LSU every year, as much as fans from both schools try to make it into a huge rivalry. Vandy in the West would have been just fine, and it still would have played Tennessee every year. Then the Commodores could have moved to the East when Mizzou and A&M came in.

A big reason behind the rise of the SEC is that it represents a region of the country that has been historically (and still is to a degree) under-represented by the major professional sports leagues. At least the SEC hasn't expanded to include the entire country like the other 3 remaining power conferences have, even if it has 4 schools just outside the Southeast now.

The SEC Football scheduling format would have been an interesting addition. Prior to them having 12 teams they would play the same 6 teams and then 1 more would rotate around. Then they went to 8 games conference schedule i think they rotated 2 games.
@rileyschuler14418 сағат бұрын
I actually have been interested in this topic and researched it before. Before the 70s it was the wild west where teams would just schedule who they wanted. Then the SEC intervened in the early 70s. For most of the 70s and 80s, you would play 6 total conference games: 5 every year opponents and then schedule home-and-home with a different team every other year out the 4 remaining schools. Some teams would also schedule a 7th game sometimes or even schedule a non-conference game with another conference opponent. Then for the 4 years before the 92 realignment (1988-91), you played 7 conference games: 5 every year opponents and scheduled 2 home-and-homes with 2 of the 4 and then switch to the other 2 every other year. If your interested, the permanent opponents were at the time: Alabama- AU, LSU, MSU, UT, VU Auburn- UA, UF, UGA, MSU, UT Florida- AU, UGA, UK, LSU, MSU Georgia- AU, UF, UK, UM, VU Kentucky- UF, UGA, LSU, UT, VU LSU- UA, UF, UK, UM, MSU Ole Miss- UGA, LSU, MSU, UT, VU Mississippi State- UA, AU, UF, LSU, UM Tennessee- UA, AU, UK, UM, VU Vanderbilt- UA, UGA, UK, UM, UT It is interesting to think about matchups now that don't have a lot of history but seem like they do: Tennessee-Florida, Tennessee-Georgia, Ole Miss-Alabama, Auburn-LSU, etc.

I’m sorry but I’m an Ou fan and the sec just blows smoke up there ass. Yeah Ou isn’t doing good this year but if it wasn’t for Sabin and urban cryer the sec isn’t much. Yes Georgia has done well lately but sec shit is a cult mentality. It’s the same as Spartans sending one man for war. Thinking they are the shit and letting propagator fuel the fires. Sec isn’t much without 2 teams that did all the heavy lifting. Yet you all think the rewards are for sec. Smfh. Now that Ou is part of this cult I kinda get it. Doesn’t make much sense unless the sec and big 10 just make up only 2 divisions in football. Basically what it is now. So with your shield or on it. Ou will be with it! But let’s not pretend that whole of sec won’t be carried on the shields of the leaders . The sec has more talk than bite, I just hope it doesn’t cannibalize itself. Which it looks like it’s doing. Sorry dalukies I have this a thumbs down. Only because the sec and Paul finebums think it’s the greatest thing and really it’s not.

Why do you have the need to pre-emptively call out people that disagree with the way you talk about integration? There's a difference between mentioning the fact that it was not integrated and when that finally changed (which I agree with, it would be wrong not to mention it given the deep south and abnormally long resistance) and being long-winded about it, talking for a whole minute about how HBCUs developed when it was not necessary for a history video about the SEC itself, shoving in the random CSA map despite the fact that there is obviously no Virginia team in the SEC and has no relevance to anything otherwise. You don't have to push off against supposed 'haters' of ever talking about integration (which probably don't actually exist) like this. It's not deserved. It's not racism or bigotry or otherwise wrong to have a issue with the ways you present certain content.
@lukeontheplains8 сағат бұрын
I preemptively call it out because those people do still exist and they do throw fits in my comments section. You'd be surprised how many backwards people there still are in the world who've dug their heads in the sand and their heels in the dirt.
@handlesareanunfortunatefeature7 сағат бұрын
@@lukeontheplains Not liking about how 'preachy' you talk about integration and when you choose to talk about it in other videos is not backwards. That to me already puts you on the overbearing side just by itself. For me I'm definitely one of those who thinks it definitely crossed the line over into being preachy and trying to make a point unasked for. This is a history of the SEC video, not a history of race relations regarding college-level sports, after all. The rest of the video is good, of course, but I don't like feeling like a certain social view is being forced on me, which I get the feeling from when you talk about integration-related things, even if you don't necessarily intend it.
@HercuLync7 сағат бұрын

We know the south was a shitty place socially unless you were a white male. We don't need a 20 something goofball who makes football videos to chastise us about it in 2024. That's all. He's acting before the video even starts as if anyone is going to have a problem with him mentioning that the SEC was segregated later than anyone else and far later than they should have been. Uh, everyone knows that. But he's a "historian" and probably just left a college campus and is convinced white guys all over the country wake up and think about harming minorities all day. So whatever. 😂 Think whatever you want you amazing white knights. Tell us all what wonderful people you are. We know better.

I wouldn't bring it up if I didn't have to. People have had issues in my comments with it before. My first Big 12 video was absolutely awful-I had to delete 3 comments that were so straight-up racist it honestly shocked me that people like that still existed. Therefore I have to keep bringing it up. It isn't hard to recognize that some people still have their heads in the sand and talking about segregation in sports instead of pretending it never happened is beneficial, especially in a historical context. It's important. So I bring it up. Just because you're mature enough to understand the history doesn't mean somebody else isn't.
@AceManning187 сағат бұрын
@@lukeontheplainsit's not that you bring it up. It's the accusatory and condescending fashion you start the video off with. I don't think you make a very good impression when you start off so confrontational. But do what you want it's your channel and you honestly make good content. I don't appreciate being talked to like an 8 year old so I'll just watch other stuff. It's no biggie.
