I've commented on other videos about a person I saw at my job, who was wearing a shirt that said “Creighton Football” on the front, & “Still Undefeated” on the back. Even growing up in Nebraska, I never knew that Creighton had ever had football, especially since that was even before my parents were born. I don't remember ever hearing the 1983 story, either, but I was only 5 at that time. Since Creighton clearly wasn't undefeated back when they had a real football team, (pre-WWII) I suspect the shirt I saw was referring to the 1983 joke story.

It’s really fascinating learning about how WW2 affected college athletics so much. That would actually be an awesome video, talking about how it killed some programs, helped make Army and Navy into dynasties, the flight school football teams, and made some odd rivalries like Notre Dame-Navy
@razormc9546 ай бұрын
I mean it did affect pro sports too
@tommykeeran67766 ай бұрын
Notre Dame's excuse to keep playing Navy is BS. Yes, they were hurting, and yes, the Navy setting up a training school on campus probably helped. But that was the case for A LOT of schools out there. Do you see anyone else using it as a reason to keep playing a massively overpowered program every year 80 years later? ND likes the easy win, that's it. If Navy went on a 10 year run where they beat them 9 times, ND would be begging to end the series. But no one points it out because we're all supposed to bow down to Notre Dame.
@warrenjacobs1946 ай бұрын
@@tommykeeran6776 ok, while it is a lopsided series and a rivalry in only the loosest sense of the word, don’t act like every every SEC program would fill their non-conference schedule with group of 5 and FCS cupcakes if they had a chance.
@tommykeeran67766 ай бұрын
@warrenjacobs194 I have no problem with the idea the series is played. The SEC, ACC, Big Ten all pad their non con schedules, that part doesn't matter to me. It's simply the reasoning they give. Just say it's mutually beneficial for you to get the easy win and Navy to get the money and exposure. Making it about 80 year old events that you're not alone in is weak. That would be like Ohio State playing Youngstown State every year and using the reasoning of Jim Tressel won us a national title so we're giving back to him. Nah, it's the win and the exposure for the lesser program. And that's ok.
@warrenjacobs1946 ай бұрын
@@tommykeeran6776 I suppose in that sense you are right. I think it’s just a catch-22. My friends in the navy don’t care about that game, they care about the commander’s cup more. If it was competitive, it could be good, but if they moved it to a non-annual game, I suppose that literally nobody would care about it. I still think in general though learning about how WW2 impacted American universities in academics, athletics, and the GI bill is interesting just because it created the “Americana” we associate the 50’s with.

I'm from the Washington DC area and George Washington University, although it's a private university, is the largest college in the city. The Colonials (Now known as the Revolutionaries) had a Football program, only briefly stopping for WWII, from 1881 to 1966. During that span they played against at least six current teams in Division 1 FBS or FCS, most notably, Cincinnati, who were an Independent, West Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia and Virginia Tech, which were a part of the conference that spawned the Southeastern Conference and the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Southern Conference. Their one and so far only Bowl game they played was the 1956 Sun Bowl against UTEP (then known as Texas Western) which GW won. The best years of the program were from the 1930's after the onset of "The Great Depression" to the 1950's as the Southern Conference became smaller and not as large in their early years. Currently ,the only Colleges that currently play College Football in DC are Howard University and Georgetown, in which both of those programs are in the FCS, and Catholic University in Division 3. I think their story should be told in hopes of GW re-establishing the Football team and I also think you would be the best to tell their story. Furthermore, before the program was discontinued, they were a tenant at DC Stadium (Later renamed Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium , aka "RFK") and most of the time, they played their home games on Friday nights and shared the stadium with the then Washington Redskins (now Commanders) and the expansion Washington Senators (now the Texas Rangers) as well as prior to RFK being built, Shared Griffith Stadium with the original Washington Senators (now the Minnesota Twins) as well as the Skins

LB was one of the 7 schools that formed the Big West, then called the PCAA, Pacific Coast Athletic Association, on July 1, 1969, for the 1969 football season. They should have had a second bowl game for winning the 1980 conference title, but the PCAA had no bowl affiliation that year. The California Bowl in Fresno would be created in 1981. Football is in a little bit of trouble because of the risk of concussions and it’s not necessarily football‘s fault. When I was a kid in the 70s, we played tackle football with no padding and almost nobody got hurt because like rugby players no, you learn to keep your head out of the way after that first your head as a kid. additionally over the last 20 years of the advent of cell phones, social media, video games, and helicopter parents who are afraid to let their children out of the house, children do not play outside and climb trees, and ‘ do dangerous things in a safe manner’ which allows them to build strength, especially core strength, and physical and mental resilience. As a lacrosse coach, I realize that it wasn’t the hits or the contacts that caused most concussions, but when somebody was knocked off balance, and they hit their head. That was mainly due to the fact that even though these kids played sports since they were kids they still didn’t have the course strength necessary to keep their balance in the first place and also where they are in space safe. There’s also a reason that in my experience playing against Canadian teams, they’re not only usually better than American teams at least in lacrosse, but they also play rough because they have national healthcare and they’re not worried about their kids getting hurt because they know that they’ll get treatment instead of their family going bankrupt. This is another reason why football is declined because we don’t have national healthcare and many families cannot afford to have their child hurt . I also work as a teacher and I’ve seen the negative effects of trying to keep children safe on the playground. And an effort to keep children safe we have taken all the equipment off the playground that allows them to try dangerous things at their ability safely. Like all things in life we need to practice to make progress and improve and that means starting at 34 and five years old doing dangerous things safely, roughhousing, playing tag, however, sadly, we have taken this all away from children and wonder why they are still getting hurt hurt. We also wonder why this is a generation of depression and anxiety. Go find the book the anxious generation. I would love to see all of these things in our society resolved so that sports like football could start growing again and possibly even expand college football ; and moreover, that football coaches would more readily except Lacrosse as a way to develop their football players to make them stronger, more flexible, and develop the skills to avoid injury, but sadly many football coaches at least here in the Northwest USA are indifferent to outwardly hostile to their football players playing lacrosse.
