I was thinking about naming him Theodore but unfortunately, he passed before I could even think much about it. So RIP Theodore, I wish I could have gotten there sooner, I will take good care of your friends and make them healthy strong goldfish. Thank you so much for watching and don't forget to check out the merch: beacons.ai/luk...

Poor mushroom cap, thank you very much Luke for trying to save him. I’m sure he his last moments were filled with happiness knowing he was going to a home that was going to try and help him. Unfortunately sometimes they’re just too far gone. I experienced that with my first time rescuing a better from a pet store it was awful. He had severe swim bladder issues too, and he only made it a couple of months after I rescued him. I’m so sorry that happened though. I know how much it sucks to have them pass away right during the acclamation process. It’s very discouraging, but you have all of those other guys that you were getting a new life too and helping some of those feeder goldfish would be food for turtles are other fish by now, but you’re giving them a new life which is amazing. I hope the little guy with ammonia runs does good breaks my heart. .

Sometimes petshops have these exquisite fish that people surrender for some quick cash, when I had goldfish I actually "rescued" a couple of fish in this situation too (albeit not this severe). I used to visit every shop in my area on a monthly basis just for this, because otherwise some stunning animals would have had this fate sooner or later. Permits for selling live animals should be way more strict... Only reputed breeders/shops that actually provide conditions for their animals and educate possible buyers should be able to sell animals. Also, like some people have already said, you could branch into goldfish rehab videos, watching goldfish thrive in your care is phenomenal and heartwarming to see.

I was at a pet store 4 or 5 months ago and this oranda was absolutely covered with ich amongest other problems.. he literally looked lifeless in the tank and the store owners even said “we’re gonna trash those, we just haven’t got them out yet”.. so I was like, well, if your just gonna throw them away, can I take this guy home and see if I can help restore him.. he was like “ill let you buy him for half price”.. even tho they had just told me they were going in the garbage… lol. Anyway.. I bought the dude, treated him and he’s still going strong today.. in fact, he’s the most feisty fancy I own.

The way I am with bettas is the way you are with goldfish. I just purchased a CT/VT mutt with a crooked face and gills from a pet store, the other one I have I got emaciated, full of parasites, fins rotting off, and grey, and he’s now a blue marble feathertail, absolutely stunning. It warms my heart to see other people who take in these sweet babies to give them a good life. It’s impossible to save all of them, thank you for doing what you can.

I know you probably know this, but you didn't fail whatsoever with him... the poor guy was just too far gone. Thank you for caring for these sweet babies and doing the absolute best you can. Fingers crossed for the other fish here! Rescue and rehabilitation is such a painful process, sometimes, for both you and the fish. I've done lots of betta fish rescues through the years and what counts is that you're trying and you're qualified to do so. They have the best possible chance with you over virtually anyone else. Once again, thank you. PS. I didn't see any mention of whether or not you purchased the fish for full price, though I may have missed it. If you haven't done so already and decide to do this again, I would highly recommend asking for a heavy discount on any non-feeder fish species. Point out every problem they have and try to get the price as low as possible. There's a balance with being firm and polite with employees - as of course it's rarely ever their fault - but animals and their well-being is the one place where putting up a decent stink in a retail store feels justified. Many stores will sell a fish at a significantly discounted price over making no money at all thanks to a fish's death.

I have 19 fancies at the moment. Two are successful rehabs. One has 1 eye and gill curl. The other I got very emaciated and diseased when he was tiny - one more night in a pet store and he wouldn't have made it. A few months in a hospital tank and lots of treatments and he pulled through and is one of my happiest goldies. I also have two with chronic swim bladder issues in a separate low flow tank. One can't stay upright for long and scoots around on her side. She gets therapy twice a day to increase muscle strength. The other has inflated anterior s.b. like Mushroom. He gets massage twice a day and that relieves it a bit. I've also had some non successful rehabs - sometimes they're just too sick to pull through.

*So the best thing to do for fishes like the big goldfish with swim-bladder is to not acclimatise them to new temperatures or introducing them to QT tank. You can add the airstone to the bag directly and add in some salt with methlyn blue. This cause less stress due to temp fluctuation and might just save them. Once slightly stable 3/4 hours later you can start adding water from the tank to the bag one cup at a time. This one was far too gone though.*

When I worked at a pet store, I was basically in charge of fish for several years. I did all I could to keep more fish alive, but when all the systems are linked and you only have so much time to dedicate to the fish, you can feel pretty powerless. If we had a fish that wasn't gonna make it if it stayed with us, I'd just write it off as dead and give it away. We just didn't have the resources, only 1 quarantine tank (that i bought) and 2 separate feature-only tanks with very specific parameters. Nothing feels worse than knowing how to save a fish, but not having the ability to. Our city's water quality would change drastically season-to-season, and it was a full-time job just trying to keep the water at a normal kH level.

If he could have survived the acclimating process, I would have tried a smaller hospital tank with a higher salt content. I've had goldies bounce back from death's door doing that. Also, instead of waiting to acclimate, you could measure the temp of the bag water, then add hot or cold water to the tank to bring it within a degree or two.

Even though this was a fail, this whole video is perfect for demonstrating how messy the aquarium trade can be. It would be amazing to be able to revive these guys, then find them good homes if you don't wanna keep them forever (I've seen people revive fish when they had almost no experience in them, just to find them a better home). I don't understand why most aquarium pet stores don't let people take home obvious sick fish for free, the employees are going to let them die and throw them out anyway, which means they are not getting money. Thank you for trying your best for these guys. ❤🐟

Thank you for highlighting it's important NOT TO GIVE PET STORES MONEY for sick animals as it encourages bad practices. It's fair to ask the pet store owner if you can try to treat a sick one, but don't let them make you pay money. In UK, if you buy a pet from a pet store and it turns out it is sick - the pet store is obliged to cover any payments for treatments to an extent and a refund or replacement (though proving the pet store is at fault can be trickier the longer you have had the animal, some treatments the payment requires the proprietor to give permission for, though it doesn't go well for them if they refused the treatment in a small claims court.)

Man, I understand the logic behind not supporting stores by “rescuing” fish but I’m so torn on the subject. I don’t want to give my money to places that keep their fish in bad conditions, but honestly I feel those fish will always be in demand regardless and saving a life or two if you can has to be a good thing. It’s hard. I genuinely want to help them if I have the space and means to do so, it would be hard to leave them if I knew I could help. :(

I once saved a mutated golden wonder killie fish from a petstore. His tank mates seemed perfectly healthy, but he was thin, had tattered up fins, and anytime he tried to come out from behind this one rock to try and get a look at the human staring into the tank, the others would attack him, so I figured the issue wasn't actual illness or poor housing, it was bullying from the other fish. I assume the reason for the bullying was because he wasn't remotely yellow. He was a cooler pale shade of grey, with darker grey horizontal stripes, and eventually developed some iridescent green and markings. Very pretty, but very different from the others. I knew absolutely nothing about killie fish, but I felt sorry for him, and he seemed like a friendly and very curious little guy since he trying to look at me even though the others kept attacking him, so I didn't want to just leave him there. So he got put in my community tank, which was mostly populated by female bettas (I have some tests I conduct on bettas to try and estimate their aggression levels, and the females are significantly less aggressive to others of their kind than the males, so I rarely had issues with them being in the same tank) a trio of mollies (a male and female pair of dalmatian mollies and a female creamsicle, who also had appearance related bullying since she was a darker, less orange shade of yellow; she wasn't very social but the other two were inseparable to the point where one would jump into a net if you caught the other,) a pair of platies, and a pair of corydoras. He recovered surprisingly quickly, and was a super friendly fish who always greeted people who approached the tank. I did sit down and research his species after bringing him home, and was surprised to find out that they're known for being aggressive towards smaller fish since Stripes only exhibited aggressive behavior twice - once when a very small, young betta nipped his tail and he chased her around for a while (he could have caught and likely eaten her if he wanted to, but he didn't, so I think he was just mad about the tail biting.) The other time he acted aggressively was after put this male silver sailfin molly in the tank, and he managed to get into three fights with separate fish (including Stripes) within the first few hours of entering the tank, and was found dead the next morning, presumably because he got himself murdered. Unfortunately my mom put a new betta in the tank without quarantining her, and caused an outbreak of cotton disease which killed most my fish including Stripes before the medicine I ordered to treat it came in the mail (checked 5 different petstores in my area, but all they had was ginko extract - which I bought and used in an attempt to buy time for the better medicine to come in...)

I worked for Petco over 4 years now and am the Animal Leader at my location (manager of all animals). Please please please don't group these stores as a whole. Yes there will be locations that don't care but my location really fucking does. For example, we've spend hundred of dollars on this one currently guinea pig on vet bills just to make sure he gets a clean bill of health before finding his forever home. Same goes for our fish! Most of the time, they come in sick from our vendors and we don't have space in the back to have multiple hospital tanks so we usually have to treat the tanks on the floor. My store is very very very transparent with these things even though we are told to not mention the history of some of these animals. We also can't just deny the order since they always come from UPS or Fedex, which is also another reason we receive sick or dead fish because those employees don't read the box and take care of the contents... But not all Petco's are the same and that goes for any of the other retail petstores!

He was a beautiful fish. I’m gonna call him Phoenix, it would have been a perfect name… if he’d survived.😔
