Something Seems Off With Todd Howard

I went to E3 2019 and got to do some really cool things while I was there. We got to play Iceborne ahead of release, I saw Cyberpunk 2077 behind closed doors, we got to play the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and, probably my favorite: I got to go and see Elon Musk and Todd Howard in a dual interview with Geoff Keely (you know, that guy from the game awards who looks like a walking talking stalk of asparagus with terrible eye contact). It was bizarre and weird and just something you don’t see every day. It was just as fascinating as you would have expected, but something struck me as odd, sitting there in the audience just 20 or so feet from God Howard and our lord and savior, Elon.

Definitely. The Anthem person used no condescending tone (how the f did Luke hear such a thing in his voice?), and he was actually nervous and feeling vulnerable and spoke with some humility. The Anthem producer acknowledged there were faults and took responsibility, whereas Todd, without skill or grace, simply ignored the question and talked vainly about Bethesda's fans, and it was painful to watch. Todd was condescending, he was pompous, he was disingenuous, and he made no effort to hide the fact that he was avoiding the question he was asked. Also, when Todd mentioned he pressed the button to buy a Tesla with the Ultra loadout, there is no indication in the video clip that it was a brag. He simply says that's what he did while making a joke reference to PC game Ultra editions. There is no brag there. And it's no secret to anyone who knows who Todd is that Todd could easily buy himself 50 "ultra" Teslas if he wanted to. Everything that Luke says in this video is the complete opposite of what is shown in the video clips. I'm wondering wtf is going on because this video is ridiculous and opposite of reality. I say that as a fierce critic of Bethesda and a critic of Todd.

Their bosses told them to recoup as much of the losses they have incurred making this mess as possible and that is what they are doing. They are working on improving the game because they need the player base to spend enough on micro-transactions that they will get off the hook and for that they need a good enough game that it will attract new players and bring back the lost ones.

Both of them responded with ultimately the same corporate PR bullshit lingo of weakly acknowledge the negative then pivot. Todd chose to pivot to an un-measurable(no way to prove him wrong) metric of "best online communities that we've ever seen." Bioware guy pivoted to listening more to player feedback. Agreed they both essentially meant the same thing but, be it Bias (I had no idea who that Bioware guy was) or maybe Todd really does have quite the silver tongue. Todd's version felt more.... sincere?(for lack of a better term) Honestly though my biggest gripe with Todd Howard and Pete Hines is they always make a joke out of community backlash and complaints, while also praising us that we are the greatest community out there it just feels so backhanded. Are we a JOKE to you Todd!? are our legitimate concerns a joke! At any rate I still like Todd as a face of the company, he is a great public speaker (and snake oil sales person) but god damn he has lost a lot of respect otherwise. Won't be getting any future Bethesda titles day one anymore, honestly that was a decision based on FO4, I didn't really care about FO76 beyond the initial hype before finding out it was Multiplayer. I'll wait at least a few months or for a price drop.

Todd Howard isn’t serving “corporate overlords”. Neither Bethesda, nor Zenimax are even publicly traded, and Howard’s wing of the company produces their largest products by a massive margin. He’s their most valuable asset and kinda gets to do what he wants at this point; he’s the sole reason they didn’t go bankrupt in ~2002. I personally think he really believed in 76, the same way we all did at E3 last year (before it was played in full form); all of us put too much faith in community based creativity/interaction. Yes that game fell flat, and Todd Howard should have to answer for that in some capacity, but for what it’s worth, his involvement with that game was very exaggerated- 76 was almost entirely constructed by the Dallas team, whereas Howard works out of Maryland 99% of the time. Now... is he insecure?? Yeah probably on some level🤷‍♂️, but look at his PR situation; he’s the most popular person to hate in the whole industry, for a game he’s not allowed to admit he didn’t make😂, as his team has been focused on Starfield since 2015. Here’s hoping that one stands out the way Skyrim, Fallout 3 & 4 have.

Claiming he "made" 4 GOTY winners seems like incredibly short-sighted thinking that fails to evaluate a number of things, such as him being on the team NOT meaning he's responsible for the successful parts, or that honestly hype trains and bribes DO play a role in what wins GOTY. You can mark a steady decline in Bethesda's games STARTING with when Todd Howard is in charge. Morrowind was their game immune to criticism, Oblivion showed some mild cracks but was still fine and by Oblivion Todd was lead, but the former leads were still there on staff to give him pointers. Oblivion was when the baton was being passed. Fallout 3 is hit-and-miss. On one hand I don't see it as blatant decline like the rest, but on the other, they also largely copied the Fallout 1 & 2 blueprints when making the game. Skyrim, FO4 and FO76 showcased massive problems, changes in tone and drops in quality. These are the games that Todd led with no guidance or blueprints from another lead or team. Skyrim for example has the shortest guild questlines in the franchise, perhaps the worst character dialog (characters spouting their one line at you when you're within 30 feet), and it somehow managed to have the most dull combat even though Morrowind and Oblivion already set that bar low. Fallout 4 had serious problems with writing being pants-on-head retarded and a lot of the game mechanics just being hollow. And finally, it cumulated in FO76, and we all know how that ended. Todd is nothing but a good public speaker and a good businessman masquerading as a hardcore gamer that loves making great games. Michael Kirkbride loved making great games and wrote the lion's share of the Elder Scrolls Lore that STILL gets used today. Obsidian clearly felt super passionate about New Vegas and about making great games. But what Todd Howard has produced on his own is essentially fast food: hollowed worlds filled with randomly generated fetch quests devoid of story or purpose.

You literally had 2 examples for Todd being "avaricious". The fact he wore the same jacket suggests he's not that much of a spender. And I think the "ultra settings" comment was meant to be a way in which he bridged the gap between him and Elon and the gaming audience. It came off weird, but I really doubt he wanted to brag about his wealth to random people who in all likelihood hate FO76 and who will take any opportunity to hate him too.
