The musical menagerie which is Carnival des Animeaux (1886), composed for two solo pianists and chamber orchestra, is among Camille Saint-Saens’ best-known works, though he himself grew weary of it. “Le Cygne,” or “The Swan,” possibly the most beloved movement, is for solo cello accompanied by two pianos creating swirling water effects. Even with just one piano arpeggiating, and a flute “singing” the solo line two octaves up, this sweet tune in 6/8 aptly depicts an elegant, aquatic bird. - Kathryn Goodson
