I just had this procedure done today. Last night i didn't sleep that good because I was so worried about this procedure. A few days ago my neurologist prescribed me a prescription for a sedative. This morning, I took 1 pill an hour before I had to be at the office and then right before they started the procedure. The only pain I felt was when the doctor injected the numbing medication and that felt like a bee sting. All and all that's the only pain that I felt. My doctor did a great job of explaining everything that I was going to experience and everything that I could possibly experience. Nevertheless all that worrying was just all in my head the procedure is not that bad. I read all these reviews and looked at this video prior to my procedure and I did fine. Not to say everyone is lying but every case is different. I was actually lying on my stomach during my procedure. Good luck to anyone who reads this and has to go through this procedure. You have my prayers. 🙏

Thank you for this comment! I need to have a spinal tap next week to move forward with my Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis/and treatment. I am very scared after hearing horror stories, although I read somewhere it is actually less painful/invasive than an epidural. And I survived two of those easily. So combine that with your wonderful reassuring comment and I KNOW with confidence I can do this! Thank you for posting. And my prayers are with you, with whatever medical issues you might have.

mine went much better than expected, no pain during procedure, just initial minor prick from lidocaine. the worst of it was back pain for several days after. if u get this done, remember to lay down for 1-2 days, no strenuous activity, drink lots of water and other fluids with caffeine to avoid that notorius, scary LP headache. i'm 1 week post and my back is getting better every day. the techs were super nice at the facility. it was x-ray guided, and i kept on my regular clothes the whole time. some places may make you change into a gown. sooo, i laid on my stomach for lidocaine stick, then LP puncture. few minutes later , they turned me on my left side for spinal fluid to drain. def not the horror show I expected AT ALL. no worries~

I got this done bedside first it was the worst pain I’ve ever had and I’ve been in and out of the hospital a lot. The pain gave me sweats and I also ended up throwing up.. After they did it under x ray it wasn’t so bad I was super nervous because the first time hurt incredibly bad. It just felt like a lightning bolt went through my leg. Also the headache I got the next day was intense… when I would be laying down all fine but the second I would get up I would have an intense headache and would immediately throw up. Thankfully I got over it by drinking lots of caffeine like the neurologist suggested.

Hey Fellas.. I had this done like 2 months ago.. To be honest, the fear is the worst.. You should not be afraid at all.. I had no local anestetic, the only thing i got was a lil bit of fun juice into iv before the procedure which makes u a bit sleepy or a little bit like drunk.. I had to have it twice (the first punch was on a bit of a wrong spot of a spine, so i actually had two holes in skin, yet only one went to the canal).. Pain? No.. Feels a bit odd, little bit pressure in the back, but nearly no pain at all.. The pain will come after the procedure (its not a huge, sharp pain tho, more like you ve been picking potatoes on a field for last 2 days) .. So ye.. Procedure is total chill, u gotta stay for a day in the hospital (You ll sleep most of the time anyway) and my sincere advise for you: After the let u home, dont be an idiot and sit at computer for the rest of the day.. Lie down to tv, turn on netflix or smth and watch few seasons of your favourite series.. Results were aight btw :) And again, dont worry, dont be stressed.. Nothing bad except a bit of headache and backache after this can not happen to you (You cannot lose ur legs or feel in legs neither, there are no nerves at this spot no more, so the worst thing that can happen is that you ll kick the doctor holding u because of irritation :) )

Testing for MS I had it twice in a two week span due to not being able to extract fluid the first time. Took an hour both times, two different spots first time and three the second. Incredibly painful. Felt every nerve in my hips and thighs. Second time they gave me two 50s of fentanyl just to make it through. Traumatic experience second only to wisdom teeth removal while awake.

I got mine yesterday. A 10 minute procedure with half an hour recovery time lying flat... took FIVE HOURS. A junior doctor and a senior doctor had 7 failed attempts between them. The junior docs first attempt touched something it shouldnt have cause I vomitted. Finally they sent me up to the anaesthetics team. Took him another 7 attempts before he finally got it. It was his "one last try" before he was going to let someone else try, by which point i was ready to say no, i was going home. It didnt hurt as such but it was one of the most uncomfortable feelings ive ever had in my life and i could feel everything popping and it just wasnt fun. If i ever have to have another one im going to demand sedation cause i couldnt go through that again. Today my back is black and blue, im stiff all over and my spine looks like a pin cushion.

Don't worry, it's not as scary or as painful as it seems. I got one done 10 days ago, I was very much in my head and almost fainted so I had to reschedule, then when I went in again I was surprised at how quickly it went. There'll be a sharp feeling when the needle is inserted and I felt a weird sensation in my thigh area, hold still during this and then the needle will get through and then they'll fairly quickly get the liquid and it'll be over. Try to not be tense, relax your back and body as much as you can and it will be fine. I wish you all the best, dear stranger.
