I work outside in Manitoba, doing construction in as low as -35Celsius, often switching from high-exertion sweaty work to long periods of low-exertion standing work like what you're doing. I'd strongly recommend wearing Merino wool thermal underwear, really any layer of wool directly on your skin, but Merino is best because it's less scratchy and more warm than regular wool, by a large margin. Your mind will be blown by the difference it makes; it doesn't only keep you warmer, it also helps you deal with your body heat when you do get warm. Regular textiles get clammy when you're warm, but wool wicks the moisture away and keeps you comfy even if your temperature does go up. It's gonna sound like snake-oil, but another benefit of wool is that when it does become moist from sweat or even just regular body moisture, it keeps a much larger percentage of its insulative value than any other textile. Honestly it doesn't get better than wool directly on your skin. If you can find ways to deal with the itch factor, like buying good quality wool such as Merino or lambswool, or if your body just doesn't mind wool in general, you will totally transform your relationship with the cold. Wool layered on top of other textiles is still good, but it's best when it's against your skin, for the sweat wicking and the ability to retain insulative value when wet. If you're worried about the price, try going to thrift shops; I often find good Merino, lambswool, or even cashmere blend sweaters for very reasonable prices. Lower thermal underwear is harder to find used, but if you buy new in the mid or late winter, sometimes it's discounted. Shops like MEC or REI will have those.

Hey Emerald. Always great videos from you and family. Suggestion: move the standup heater forward towards the end of the shelf on the wall. You are losing heat (money) into open air. Emerald, sometime if your struggling for a video idea and you're dad has the time, have him get into a little detail as to what engine oil viscosity types he uses both summer and winter and in the various types of equipment as diesel vs gas ( the LT 40 as well as all the other small gas engines ) and of course the pickups, the skidder, crawler, loader, Kubota and so forth and if he uses synthetics or non synthetic oils. Also the viscosity ( which may be a brand name and their name for it ) of hydraulic oil used in the various equipment as you have a lot of pieces of equipment that use a hydraulic ( or a gear/transmission/hydraulic ) type oil. It may not interest all viewers but you might be surprised how many will be curious to know what your operation in your particular climate uses. Might have to break it up into a couple of videos ( and there is gear oil and also greases used .. it never ends ) I assume Ken makes all the oil/lube choice decisions so he's the best one to explain it in his words !

'Thermal underwear' is what you need when it gets real cold. This covers your legs and arms and keeps hold of your body heat. Good socks and insoles for your boots will stop the ground getting in and wear a thermal hat too. Also, some thin gloves with thick finger-less gloves worn on top will allow you to operate the control panel.

Four layers comfy next to the skin (cotton) mid layer wool knit shirt or turtleneck merino wool. The third layer is wind proof or resistant,, I use a dress shirt. Fourth layer is anything you like appropriate to the day. Merino wool long johns under the jeans. The most basic trick is save the heat from your back and legs,, and your hands stay warm. And loose layers,, and merino wool, lambs wool, buffalo down, cashmere as a mid layer,, is essential. Nothing,, I repeat, nothing keeps heat better than a fine wool. There is not an artificial fiber that comes close. Wool. If you would like specific sources, just ask.

Not the ones that just have the fingers cut off at the first knuckle but the ones that have a mitt that can flip back over the hand so you can use your fingers to run the mill or flip the mitt closed on one side if you don't need both hands at the moment. For especially cold days you can tuck the hand warmers into the palm of the glove. Don't know how long they'd last if you wore them when you're the swamper but they should help when running the mill & I expect you've probably already found a good winter work glove for when you're the swamper.
