Poplar is my favorite. Have you considered selling small bottles of your sawdust as merchandise? I'd buy some, and make a collection of the different woods.

Emerald, thank you for making this video "as always" to you! I don't know if we have any Poplar on our property, rainbow or otherwise, but I am definitely going to ask my forester next time I speak with him. If you were a professor at a college everyone would want to take your classes. You would be very, very "Poplar" to say the least.

The Tulip Poplar in colonial times was known as the “tree of friendship”. Because its ease of working with, large diameter, straightness, grows fast, Poplar syrup is as good as maple syrup and a great shade tree.

Not rot resistant although we used it as flooring in the livestock barns. It had to be off the ground, Once it had been in there for years it was almost impossible to drive a nail through it without a drilled hole. The rumor was the that the livestock urine and stool is what turned it into armor. In northern bc canada they are called "bams" as that is what you hear in the bush during windstorms as the mature ones would rot from the pith out.

I did architectural woodwork for 18 years buiding custom wood doors, jambs, casings, etc. The shop had a moulding profile milling machine that milled 1,000's of feet of poplar. I always noticed the different color stripes. They were usually a dark blue to black, dark red to purple and more. When examining these pieces, after a while I began to notice there was always a 1/8 inch horizontal worm hole, about in the middle of the vertical color stripe that had a beginning and end. I also noticed this happens around breaks or cracks in the tree. My thought is that water seeps in and causes the wood to change color. I am not a scientist so I don't know the specifics of how it occurs but do feel sure this is the cause. The worm hole was there every time. Like your channel. PS I'm sure you already know that Walnut saw dust/chips should never be sold to horse farms as it will kill horses. Keep it seperate.

In Michigan we have Choke Cherry Trees. They grow real nice and straight. I have seen some all of 20 inches in diameter at the trunk, and over 50 feet tall. When I heated with wood, I cut down a lot of different kinds of trees but Choke Cherry was always my favorite. Fresh cut it smells really neat and sometimes it is just breath takingly beautiful in color. Rich Burgundy, Deep Purple and often very solid Red. The smoke smelled sweet, a lot different from acrid strong Oak, Hickory or Maple. It didn't have the btu of Oak or Hickory but it was as good as White Birch & Silver Maple. It dried easily and burned very well. Nice video Em, thank you for showing Purple Popple wood. ben/ michigan

I always liked to fell the big poplars in the woods , usually very tall . I fell one that was 3 feet or bigger on the stump and I stepped it off 90 feet tall to the first limb at 8" and cut the top off . That 90 foot long log was heavy , it made the skidder work a bit to get it out of where it was at . Big poplar trees make a lot of board footage fast and will fill a log truck full with just a few trees some times .

We have a few yellow poplars (Liriodendron tulipifera) here in Southern Ontario, native in a few spots and planted in others, but they’re a different species than the trees we call poplars (family Salicaceae, poplars, aspens and cottonwoods). My first introduction to Yellow Poplar was in the form of wooden pallets where I work that would come in from the U.S. I would often notice the purplish and greenish tinges on many of the boards.

Think I said this once before when Emerald did an episode on popular, the pioneers used a lot of poplar to build log houses it has a natural repellent to wood boring insects, apparently they don't like the taste and as long as it stays dry it can last hundreds of years. Good showing I've cut poplar mostly for making furniture as it works easy and sometimes a lot of colors. Ya'll have a good day say Hi to Boss Man and Boss Lady and Grandpa! JLa
