I would prefer 12-32 with GX9 because the 12-32 is my favorite lens for travel, street photos, event photos, and candids. A good street photo and candid photo setup needs to be inconspicuous to avoid attracting attention. A small (but quality) black camera and small (but quality) black lens are ideal for that. Also, a rear tilt screen is much better for street, events, and candids because a tilt screen is hidden behind the camera where the public doesn't see it. I shoot most street, and all candids, with camera horizontal because turning the camera vertical attracts unwanted attention. So the fact that a tilt screen doesn't work for vertical shots is irrelevant to me. I sometimes also shoot environmental portraits (often candid) and they're always shot with camera horizontal. I sometimes shoot architecture interiors and exteriors, and I always shoot them with camera horizontal. So I prefer a tilting screen like my EM10ii has, and like GX80/85, and GX9 have. Tilting screen is much better for street and candids than a fully articulated screen. For architecture and landscape either type screen works. For selfies and vlogging the fully articulated is needed, but I never do those things. So for my needs, tilt screen is needed and ideal. Also small, black, inconspicuous equipment is needed. I prefer Pan 12-32mm, 14mm, 20mm, 25mm. The Pan-Leica 15mm is nice too. I'm thinking of changing my camera body from EM10ii to GX9 to get the coveted feature of using Manual mode with Auto-ISO and at same time being able to conveniently adjust Exposure Compensation. On Olympus cameras, only the Pen-F and EM1ii have that expert level feature. It's more commonly available on Panasonic bodies, which is a HUGE reason to get a Panasonic body, IMO. P.S. - another thing I like about GX9 is the rangefinder shape body looks similar to a casual consumer point and shoot camera, which would make candid subjects take less notice of it because it looks casual. That would help avoid spooking the wildlife (candid people can be as skittesh as wildlife). DSLR shape cameras (and big lenses) are more intimidating to people, especially candids. Also, I only buy black cameras. I use a black sharpie to blacken all brand name text. This helps my cameras be less noticeable to candid subjects and thieves alike.

I loved my GX-7 and my GX-85. I have the lenses I want from owning these cameras and plan on getting a GX-9. The frustrating part of buying Panasonic Lumix in the United States is with most models you can't buy the body only. You're forced to buy a kit lens which is probably fine for newcomers to the brand but is very frustrating for those who have been users and would like to upgrade just the body. Olympus has always been more flexible in this regard in the USA. As always, a great video....

Thank you Matti for this video. I love the GX9. I love the size, RF style, and lightweIght of the body. Having an EVF is a must for me and some small bodies have eliminated this feature. The tilting LCD screen is a big plus as I am a photographer. I also appreciate the touch screen. The IBIS is very helpful. Dual IS with LUMIX lenses is better. I love the files that come out of this body. For color I use the Vivid and B&W the L monochrome D. SOOC these settings produce very pleasing images. The contrast detection depth from defocus (DFD) is fast and accurate for photography. In low light the DFD has some trouble locking on focus and you may see it going back and forth. For video the DFD is slow, not always accurate, and not sticky on the subject. It is great that there are so many small, lightweight prime and zoom lenses that are ideal for this body. I don’t use the tilting EVF. The biggest complaint I have about this and the GX85 is LUMIX didn’t provide a microphone jac. There are so many video features on this body. A microphone jac ould have made this body closer to being perfect. I shoot clips so this deficiency is less important for me. It is disappointing the GX9 isn’t weather sealed. Like many GX body users I’d like a GX body with PDAF. Lumix has discontinued this body line so this isn’t happening. As a result I just purchased a 2nd GX9 as a backup. This is how much I love this camera. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

There's no need to change the body at all; that thing is such a keenly-designed chunk of well-built toolbox that strangers on the street have even told me how beautiful my camera is.

It is large enough to fit in my 76 year old hands, weighs a fraction of what I'm used to and has a screen and lens availability (at good used prices) that I can manage. There is still a learning curve. I'm trying to turn off the screen except for image review and that will take me a moment. By the time I go for a month in Budapest, I will have an 8_25, a 50 _300 in addition to my 12 to 60 lens. I'm looking for interior and exterior architecture as well as architectural ornamentation. Instead carrying two 80Ds with lenses at about 8LBS each, I'll have one G9 with two lenses at about 3LBS total

In Italy you can choose the kit: body only, 12-32, 12-60 or 14-140. I believe that the 12-32 should never be missing in the kit when you want to go out with the camera in your pocket
@miljomupp4 жыл бұрын
My wife and mother gave me the GX9 as a gift last summer. There was a special bundle offered by Mattssons Foto in Lund Sweden then: the GX9, the 12-32 pancake, the 25 f/1.7 and the 45-100 all in one for a fantastic price. 😃 I started out slow and learned and used slowly (never had a system camera so newbie). In the beginning of the year I enrolled in a photography course but after three lessons covid-19 began to approach and I turned to KZbin (Matti your channel plus 4-5 other Panasonic photographers that I follow) plus taking pictures in doors and in the backyard. While I really cannot compare with other cameras, lack of personal use, what I am missing in this camera is a microphone input to improve videography. I know it isn't intended for videos but even on the small body there is room for this. I am a university lecturer and recording small videos outdoors to embed in lectures on line would have been perfect but alas I have to stay at most 70 cm away and talk right at the camera and little to no wind. I have since bought the 42.5 f1.7 and the 12-60 f3.5-5.6 which you feature in your video. Maybe the 15 f1.7, someday, would be next or a ultra wide angle ... I am otherwise very happy with my camera 📸 😃

I think the GX9 is Panasonic's best camera; I chose it over the G9 as I mostly shoot street. I added the handgrip and a Japanese black silk strap which transforms the handling. With a compact prime its perfect for the street. Mine came with the 12-32mm kit which was a great surprise (image quality is stunning) and is now my travel lens; I added the 14-140mm for nature (the 12-60mm isnt long enough for the Zoo and wildlife hides). Also I have both the GX9 and the Leica T with tilting Visoflex which is a feature I would be loath to lose. I usually have the EVF of both cameras at 45deg. Mostly i use the tilting back screen. I cant really fault the GX9 ;-)

I always expected that 14-140mm is a huge lens. According to specs it's just slightly bigger than 12-60 or 12-35/f2.8 and it weights just 265g so it's lighter than second one. Weird
@vicibox4 жыл бұрын
@@pavelperina7629 It really is a fantastic lens (equivalent to 28-280mm). Its sharp enough to take a massive crop and I have often cropped it at the zoo to 500mm. There really is no other lens like it, its unique. Could say the same about the 12-32mm which really is astonishing; I can slip the GX9 with the pancake zoom in my handbag when travelling, long zoom and a couple of primes in my backpack for when I arrive. The GX9 with grip and 14-140mm is exactly the same size and weight as the Sony A7 with 85mm f1.8. yet its the equivalent of 280mm. That is the strength of MFT. Its also why Sony outsells Canon and Nikon now - winks

Yup, I love my GX8 as a 24/7 carry with the 15mm f/1.7 H-X015 .... BUT the ergonomics are too Bauhaus and pretty boy form over function - a Leica trait. Poor grip, poor button location (and not tactile), poor SD card access, poor controls ... However, and that is the PLUS, great Rollei/Exacta/500C viewfinder. Kind of a box camera pre set & ready to shoot! All Panasonic needs to do, is talk to photographers not the Sunday kind with a fireplace mantel to decorate ...

No need for a mic input as this camera is clearly aimed at stills photography first. Panasonic even markets this camera at street photographers and there are a ton of other Panasonic cameras for video. The two improvements Panasonic should be looking at is weather sealing and improved EVF, but keeping the form factor for street photography. All that aside, I agree with you about its relevance. In 2023 I'm looking for a small setup and the GX9 still ticks most boxes. It's just that EVF that they really messed up.

The tilt viewfinder keeps my face off the screen AND is a lifesaver shooting on a really bright day. I wanted a lightweight, rangerfinder style (who needs the bump) and no sharp corners. The menu system had to be something I could deal with, and it was important to be able to later get a quality lens without having to use an adapter. I don’t vlog, i do like to shoot from the waist rather than hold camera out in front of me, great for street and groups. This camera is sturdy and pretty much goes everywhere with me. I would have preferred fewer artistic features and it is taking awhile to understand the relationships of the settings to the software software, but that adds to the adventure :)

There is a website with a timeline with all the camera models from Panasonic? I find the naming convention very odd and sometimes a model that ( based on name) I think is older than other, turns out to be more modern. Thanks for this video!

Thanks Matti ... think I'd only buy one if my GX80 broke! Both the GX80 and the GX9 are aesthetically pleasing* and discrete, but I sometimes think a bigger grip would be nice. Panasonic do sell an add-on grip compatible with both cameras ... * (I like the silver top version)

I bought a non-Panasonic grip: JJC HG-GX9 because the Panasonic version blocks access to the battery and card on the bottom. Adds a slight weight and heft but the better grip is really worth it. Plus it lifts the screen away from the bottom so if you attach to a tripod with a traditional screw attachment the bottom of the screen does not get scraped.
@duncandavies19664 жыл бұрын
miljomupp I’ve just ordered one of these grips for my GX80. Worth noting that if you have an Arca Swiss QR tripod head, the camera will fit directly - no faffing with a screw on plate 😎
@miljomupp4 жыл бұрын
@@duncandavies1966 yes it does work mounting directly. But I find that if I am out and about shooting and filming without a tripod a long time I need the grip. And usually the ARCA swiss type is mounted underneath. My comment was mostly about how the Panasonic original grip blocks battery change while the JJC one does not.

Hello dear Matti, I see a large part of your videos in which you define yourself as "ambassador of Panasonic", a brand that I am a fan of, although I also have Nikon and Sony. I recently bought a Lumix GX9 with its 12-60mm f3.5 5.6 kit as an "upgrade" from a gx80 that I have owned for 4 years, as I love that compact and unique design. I wanted more resolution as all the reviews of the GX9 sensor were good, including the dpreview comparisons with their test module. On the other hand, after a new trip I determined that I can't bear to carry a 1.1 kg camera like the Nikon with its sigma 17-70mm. For some reason KZbin algorithms, since I bought the gx9, constantly show me many videos praising the gx80/85. The question is if it was worth the upgrade or if I would have bought a better lens such as a Leica 12-60mm f2.8 4 or an Olympus 12-40 f2.8. Other lenses I have are the 12-32mm kit pankake; a 25mm f1.7 and the all-terrain 14-140mm. Is it worth selling the gx9 and buying those lenses instead? Thanks in advance for your advice.
@mattisulanto2 жыл бұрын
I really can't say what is worthwhile for you, because I don't know what and how you shoot. You are sort of comparing more resolution to more lenses, which is strange and makes me think that maybe you are not sure why you need some new gear. Do you just want to buy something or is there a specific need?

If not the GX9 do you have any other recommendations??
@mattisulanto2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. When the camera goes into sleep mode and then you touch the shutter, I'd say it's ready to shoot again in about a half a second. The delay is very short, but I guess it's still possible to miss a shot. Then again, every camera has some delay starting up after sleep.

@@MontrencoPerez If you trust in DP Review, they indicate an increase in low light / high ISO quality in the GX9 over the GX85. That would be good. You get a 12-60mm lens thrown into the deal, and that is good. The exposure dial on the top is a good added feature, though I use the back dial for that. The 20MP may add a little room for cropping. At $799 is a good deal. Come close-out if it is day $599, it may become irresistible. I have a GX85, Olympus Pen PL-8, and the EM10 mark II -- all work fine and look great. Panasonic cameras are made in China and Olympus in Vietnam. Some Panasonic lenses made in Japan - not 12-60 Lumix. Great video Matti. I have the GX85 (which of course is very similar in design it the GX9), and I also have the larger G85. Both have the same 16 MP sensors. I really like both of these cameras, but compared to others I’ve shot (Canon, Fuji, Olympus) the dynamic range and colours are not great. My question is are these much better with this 20 MP GX9? Right now I can get good looking images out of the GX85 & G85, but they have to be RAW, and processed with either with your free Lightroom profile or some third-party presets. So: Is the dynamic Range any good? Are the jpegs useable, including skin tones? Does the video have unlimited recording? Thanks for your time.

Thanks. The 20 Mp sensor is better than the 16 Mp, but the difference is no day and night. I've never had any real problems with either sensor. In my opinion the jpegs are useable, but I still prefer to shoot RAW and the video is limited to 29 min 59 s.

There are very good reasons to own the Gx9. But there are reasons I never did and much prefer my Gx8. The EVF is tiltable but quite small and field sequential, both of which I didn't like. The body isn't weathersealed. And I prefer a flippy screen for all-round use. They were the main objections I had when I tried one. Hopefully a GX10 would be more like the Gx8, for me at least. I know others disagree, and that's great if they love the Gx9. It has a great sensor.

My first mirrorless camera was GF1 and 20mm lens. It was nice, rather small combo and it was fun to use. But body with small grip was completely unsuitable for bigger lenses. On the other hand my current G80 has flawless ergonomics and I don't miss anything on that camera (well, usb charging, option to use it as a a webcam, up-to-date sensor) I considered GX9 few times in combination with prime lenses just for size and better sensor, but I never justified buying this camera or other options (such as OMD,-M10 mk III, Fuji X100F, LX100II) I don't see any use with lens such as 12-60mm, size of the body with bigger lens can be more disadvantage than advantage. But it's hard to judge without carrying camera over ten minutes. And it sells in many kits in Czech Republic: body only for ~630EUR, with 14-140 +370EUR, with 12-32 +100EUR, with 12-60 +200EUR, with 20mm/f1.7 +365EUR (it's cheaper to buy body and 20mm lens separately). Don't be put off by the form factor: try it. Panasonic has a good leather grip that bulges the front grip slightly and adds about 1cm on the bottom which transform the usability with larger lenses like the panaleica 12-60 or the Olympus 12-40. There is also a benefit in a rangefinder body: if you are shooting from the hip, with the screen tilted, it is much, much more comfortable to press the shutter release with your thumb rather then with your index finger and this is much easier with a GX9 then with any G/GH body.
