I live in the Blue Ridge, Virginia mountains..... every spring around May/June these will come to our screen door in the evening. They are spectacular moths... nothing else like them. We have some pretty interesting bugs here... fireflies, miller moths that are as big as bats, enormous praying mantis, and walking sticks, and the always entertaining june bugs :)

Hickory, walnut, red and white oak, sweet gum, beech, and birch will all do for Luna moths
@mushisenpai7611 Жыл бұрын
What type of leaves did you put in the bowl for him or her to cocoon? 😊
@TheMimic-kn2ef5 ай бұрын
Most likely hickory leaves, their primary host plant. It wasn’t sweet gum tree leaves, which is the secondary host plant Luna moths sought for. The males needs the antennae fluffy to find the girls while the ladies have more slender antennae. I think it was a male in the video.

@mushisenpai7611 No problem. I raised some myself from eggs. How I got those eggs was funny; the mother moth tried laying some on my forest green shirt and I had to move her into one of our bug enclosures to let her lay them in peace. XD Never regretted it.

@@TheMimic-kn2ef Aww that’s such a wonderful story! Nature is so beautiful. I sometimes see them in my area and the spider crickets try to eat them. I hate to see that happen so I’ve been considering building a habitat in the summer and releasing them where I know a lot of other wild Luna moths are!

Just got one chrysalis from Butterfly World in Florida. They had 10 species of cocoon butterflies including this Luna Moth. Can’t wait for it to emerge. 🤍🤍🤍

There is a beautiful Luna Moth attached to my kitchen window screen. It hasn't moved for an entire day and night. Is it dead?

Probably not. They certainly aren’t the most active critters, so I wouldn’t worry.

Try leaves such as oak or hickory. They’ll eat walnut tree leaves as well.

I found a luna caterpillar this mornimg on my doorstep on my way out to walk my dogs.. I i didn't know what to do for it so i placed it under a boxwood hedge to keep it safe/comfortable but when i got back it was completely gone, i wanted to take it in and nurture it but it was gone..i hope i did the right thing.. it was so cute i wish i would have brought it inside immediately

I feel like this is wasting it’s life. I don’t know why anyone would do this or want to, it’s whole purpose is to become an adult to mate and die they only live a week as adults and can’t even eat. Doing this is just like “wow it’s so pretty who cares if I’m wasting it’s life as long as I get to observe it up close” it’s wasteful.
