Luna Moth on my Windowsill

We get these mammoth beauties every summer, the large and lovely Luna Moth❤️

Based on the antennae size, that’s actually a male! Males have big antennae so they can smell the female moth’s pheromones. A general rule of thumb with moths is that if it has antennae that look like they get wifi, it’s probably a male.

Yeah, there's a huge culture of antennae envy among male moths. Some buy obnoxiously loud motor vehicles (motorcycles & cars & pick up trucks) to masquerade their pathetically inadequate antennae. Amazingly, it seems to work!

Moths are incredibly based. Most Luna Moths don't have mouths and can't eat. So they spend their remaining 4 to 7 days of life trying to reproduce before they starve to death or completely dehydrate. A salute to all Lamp Bois around the world.⭐️

My dad used to rear these when I was a kid! He’s a retired entomologist, and every summer he’d raise Luna, Cecropia, and Polyphemus moths, either in brood cages or brood sleeves wrapped around the tree branches that the caterpillars fed on (Luna moths only prefer hickory, and they wouldn’t eat cut branch leaves, so they had to be in the sleeves-that made it harder, but worth it!). I once even brought home a female Luna moth I’d captured at work during a night shift when I was a security guard so he could raise them again! I inherited his brood cage, but sadly I wouldn’t be able to rear Luna moths myself as I don’t have a hickory tree in my yard. They are absolutely beautiful, so thanks for the trip back to my childhood! And just for the record, that one’s a male-the larger antennae are a dead giveaway. The females have antennae that are the same length, but much thinner.

So beautiful, these are my favorite kind of moth! (As you can probably tell based on my profile picture!) This one seems to actually be a male, since he has full antennae! The males also tend to move around a lot more, which is why you'll occasionally find them in spots that they weren't previously in!

I just found one at my Work Office on the window Seal. Thought it was very Beautiful as well. I heard they only live for 1 weak. Such a shame. I think some of the Month are prettier than many of the butterflies. First one I recall seeing with comb shape feelers protruding at the front.
