To be clear, could one tell me how this thing is flown ? Is there one crew in charge of conventional sailing and one in charge of the flying, a skipper and a pilot ? Are there computer controlled feedback loops and actuators in charge of stability or is it inherently stable ? That would seem an enormous achievement, I’d be amazed if there was no electronics inside. You’d need them for development, sure. But but, I’m shocked. Well done. The Rehutai is a mix of all other challengers solutions, ETNZ copied a lot. It have the V shaped hull and polishness of Luna Rossa, the sides and the keel like ineos, the prown is very similar to Patriot. The only boat where they haven't copied nothing it is own previous boat that is completely different.
@robinhodgkinson4 жыл бұрын
@@solinvictus1234 Great Scott, you've cracked the case wide open Sherlock! : ) Jokes aside I think you've missed the elephant in the room. If you set out to build the fastest AC75, one overall design, one combination of factors, will be fastest. That's the holy grail all the teams are chasing and if they were all to get that right, the boats wouldn't just have similarities, they would all be identical! Little wonder then there are similarities between the boats as they chase that ultimate design. No smoking gun here. And keep in mind many major components are the same on all the boats - foil arms, rig, sails, hydraulics etc. Which dictate how much of the rest of the boat is best designed. In fact I'm surprised they don't look more alike. I guess that's testament to the complexity of the job. Secondly the kiwi boat's design and testing and construction would have started long before the other team's boats hit the water - they're not building a dinghy. You can't make changes, particularly major ones like hull shape after you start building it. And they most assuredly didn't start building it just a few months back! The idea that they copied what the other boats have done doesn't stack up. And lastly ETNZ has a history of innovation with the likes of winged keels, cyclors etc. Not least of which is the very concept of the AC75 - a foiling monohull which flies the single hull! Why would they copy anyway, when they have a proven history of innovation, and beating the opposition with it. And the other teams know that, particularly after Bermuda. They don't need to copy. They lead. And as a kiwi, I hope they get it right this time as well. We will see...
@solinvictus12344 жыл бұрын
@@robinhodgkinson It wasn't a criticism on TNZ, but only what things are. But no, if you copy another boat solution it could not work, simply cause yes the parts as hydraulics as the same, but the rest really not. The foils for example there's who have them made in a V shape and who with a T shape (TNZ) and it change everything. Also the foils arms, there's who have them more frontally to the hull wich help to lift faster the boat and having an optimal center of mass distribution, so capable to make an hull prown with less air resistance (equal to more air penetration, meaning speed), as LR for example and who have the arms more backwards on the hull (Britannia, Patriot) so they have a less aerodynamic prown (more air resistance downside the prown, meaning less speed) to help the boat to lift from the wather, due the center mass more focused on the back of the hull, so the necessity of balancing the boat frontal side. So talking about ETNZ, copying all the solution of boats with different concepts, expecially at the begginning of this class development it could not be a winning move but even a disaster. For sure with time the concepts will converge in a single concept capable to give the max performance, but now is too soon for that, simply cause they didn't raced against, so they still don't know what concept is better, if the one of Luna Rossa or the one of Patriot and Britannia.
@robinhodgkinson4 жыл бұрын
@@waylon2755 I'm guessing your point is related to the paragraph that quotes Bernasconi, "We are not shy to take up good ideas from other teams when we see them". No surprises there. This was written 12 months ago - all the teams were looking at each others first boats, and no doubt looking again at their own design. However no team got to see what any other teams second boat was like, before designing and building their own second boat. And he continues "I think across the fleet there are good ideas in all camps and probably there will be a convergence with the second boats as everyone sees what is working and what isn't working" Which was exactly my point in the above comment. The 2nd kiwi boat looks more like the others team's 2nd boats because that is what a faster boat looks like. And I'm hoping the fastest boat looks most like the kiwi one!

Yes shes fast alright. But in Autumn light airs will find out the true skills of the crews my money is still on Peter Burling and his boys.

That's amazing! I never seen anything like it...

All these people commenting about how it would hold up in rough offshore conditions or f it hit something - it's a race boat! It's like criticizing a Formula 1 car for bad mileage and nowhere to put the shopping bags. But I agree it's hideous.

You mean you can't go four wheeling with a Formula 1 car? It's not made for that? Who'd have thought...?

...hideous? It’s a beautiful boat. Just not practical for normal use.

All I can contribute is Canada National Defence had deHavilland Canada build a hydrofoil craft and in 1968 trials it reached 114 km/h. On one run it hit a telephone pole in the water, cut it like nothing and kept going. Like a lot of good things it was ahead of its time and got cancelled. re HMCS Bra D'or

You don't use foils in rough conditions, I'm sure its still pretty fast on the hull.

This is an amazing craft. I still have a soft spot for the old 12 meter full hull racers.

Best so far , looks faster than any other boat

Wasn’t sure what I was looking at, at first. Thought something broke on that magnificent boat.

I have no idea what I am watching. I have no idea why I am watching. I had no idea why I saved this to watch later then, 2:11 Have those weird sticky out bits got propellers on the ends of them? Just when you think you've seen everything.

An engineering masterpiece.

So all the weight of the boat sits in that hinge that offsets the center of gravity and allows for more canvas, which lifts the boat out of the water and allow more speed? A bit fragile, on the long run...
@cole97994 жыл бұрын
pretty soon the whole thing will be flying and they will just drag a line to the water and still call it sailing
@Helyzz824 жыл бұрын
Theoretically that is possible, however I think the upward force (lift) it gains has to come from the water, not from the sails, unlike kite-sailing. Although I would also love to see some insane stuff on that :D
@GottvonRom4 жыл бұрын
Isn‘t that already happening?
@cole97994 жыл бұрын
@@GottvonRom pretty close
@Helyzz824 жыл бұрын
@@GottvonRom I think not; this boat is getting its lift from the water (with hydrofoils), and does not use airfoils to create lift (the hull might create some slight lift, but far from the majority).

Soviet designer Rostislav Alekseev came up with and implemented this idea about seventy years ago! He was a brilliant man! It is a pity that these ideas were lost with the death of the Soviet Union. Enthusiasts well done, develop these projects for all mankind as the USSR did!
