In order to understand Metaphor first let's look at Simile. He fought like a lion. He is compared to a lion here. How did he fight? Like a lion. When words such as like and as are used for comparison, it means the figure of speech is a simile. E.g. She is as timid as a lamb during an argument. Here, she is being compared to a lamb. A lamb is timid. She is also timid, just like a lamb. Now the same sentences can be written in the following manner: 1. He was a lion in the fight. 2. She is a lamb when it comes to an argument. Here also there is a comparison, but it is more subtle. He is a lion - means he and the lion are same. He has the qualities of a lion and is brave and royal like the lion himself in a fight. Similarly, She is the lamb means she becomes a lamb during an argument. She becomes scared and timid just like the lamb. When we say something is a metaphor, it means it is a symbol of or a representation of something else. E.g. In The Cold Within, the logs of wood are metaphors for sin. Because Television is more attractive than books. :) The poet does not want to mince his words or beat around the bush in his poem. He jumps straight into the heart of the problem. He spends almost half of the poem raving and ranting about the Television. Then he takes on a gentler tone as he begins to extoll the different books and the experiences that they afford children with.

The poet wants to direct the parents' attention to the problem and he therefore talks about the negative aspect that is, television. Parents want the best for their children. So they would naturally want to listen to anything that tells them how to protect their children from something that is harmful.
