Urusawa's work can benefit a lot in live action because of how the panels are illustrated to look like a movie. It will be awesome, if given to a really good director. That was a fever dream of a movie with CG that people today would consider to be "bad", but it blends so well with how ridiculous the action scenes themselves get, and the story is surprisingly emotional.

There are two sins an adaptation can make (at least according to me): _ the first one is to assume the viewer already know /read/watched the Source material . It's an opportunity for the filmmakers to be lasy , not putting efforts into developing the characters , not give them fun , enjoyable and interesting dynamic and maybe describe the world they're interacting with ; because you already know them (so why bother) . And I'm not talking about the neat little reference in the background that , can be totally removed fro aside from your memory the moment I'm talking about things from the source material having importance for plot in order for it to go forward , but not explained because they think that you already know them (references are used as a substitute for an actual script). so things just happen without much explanation and the casual viewer (who went on wanting to watch a movie about something he's never heard of) who's wondering what's going on and finds it underwhelming at best and confusing at worst . _the second sin is to make a 1:1 copy of the original ., The filmmakers don't make a film , they just redo the original at almost every detail , ignoring every basic rule of filmmaking and throw cinematography out of the window . If it avoids these sins , its chance for being good (fir me) are higher . I also think that a good movie adaptation is a good movie first and an adaptation second , so it's also a criterium on top of avoiding the two sins cited above ; And I do not see faithfulness as crucial or vital one . Disney has never been really that faithful when ot comes to adaptations of fairytale stories and never shy away from modifying the story to suit what they wanted to tell , their interpretation of the original story and it didn't prevent their movies to be good and never prevented the audience from liking them. The adaptations I take in high regard are those that have interesting takes or visions of what they adapt . (So I think we'll still get good live action adaptation of anime as long as talented people who know what they're doing and have imagination , work on them (Like Edge of tomorrow) and as long as the Japanese don't work on them )

A good movie adaptation must be a good movie first and a good adaptation second . And you get it when talented and competent people who know what they are doing , work on said movie. This is why I'm personally more excited to watch US adaptations of manga like Alita Battle angel , Ghost in the shell and Death Note than japanese , because japanese kind of lack imagination when it comes to make said adaptations: _the faithfulness of the costumes makes the actors look more like cosplayers than anything; _Actors do not sct , they try imitate 2d , really colorful characters which bodies aren't bound to the laws of physics 24/7 ; _ The script writers do not think of an interesting story , it could easily be a normal feature length anime movie .

it's only really the western adaptations that are terrible. The Japanese ones are usually good people just like to nitpik the smallest details, like cgi being. In something like aot its honestly horrible but most arent like that. They usually have the heart of the original but with the changes necessary for live action. For example you say prison school seems like a jav as if that wasnt the point..

Ngl, "Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan" was the only Live Action I've seen do well and even better than the Anime/Manga version. A number of reasons as to why: •The live action doesn't expect you to be a JoJo fan, hence the different world it takes. •Expanded screentime each episode. (Literally around 40-50 minutes each, which helps the pacing.) •Rohan's characterization is featured with more depth, even if he's more of the jerk than the Anime/Manga version. His personality just goes so well during interactions with others. •It utilizes its simplicity/cheapness to the fullest. (You'll see when watching.)

If you want some good live action anime watch Tokusatsu like Kamen Rider or Super Sentai. They have the same over the top acting that a lot of anime does as well as the less realistic monsters and makes ur work in live action. Also best manga adaptation is Oldboy.

I think the biggest issue most adaptations have to deal with is the length of the source material. The more popular things tend to be relatively long, or at least a couple of seasons. When you take that, try to compress it into less than two hours, you're going to run into trouble. This isn't anime adaptation exclusive, as many book adaptations run into the same issue. Heck, this is half the reason every anime adapted from a manga or light novel will have comments about how the source material did it better, so yeah. This is part of why Alita Battle Angel works, because it isn't adapting a long series, but rather, something much briefer. And it has the budget, a person who knows how to get value from said budget, and people behind it who get the source material. But it is also why the movie doesn't work, as its ending feels lackluster. The main enemy to defeat in the movie doesn't feel like the big bad of the movie, and so the movie kinds of ends on a blah note. As a movie, even if part of a larger story, the ending of a movie, especially the first one, has to have a certain feeling that something was completed/accomplished, and it lacks this. That said, there's another aspect that hinders things as well. And this is one that hits adaptations and remakes in general. Success of the OG is what leads to people wanting to invest money in an alternate version, because lower perceived risk. But that means the new version will be compared against something that worked. And if you have checked into various "behind the scenes" type stories of things, there are often a lot of factors at play in what makes things work. And so the new version will need to have that same "luck", in addition to the challenges of adapting to a different medium and/or audience. Really, we'd be better off seeing new versions of things with potential that missed the mark, rather than things that just worked, or things that are relatively under the radar, with the new version doing its own thing ("Edge of Tomorrow" being an example, of something more inspired than an adaptation of of the source material).
