Sunshine is the one I could see being ran the most since it's basically the same as the original (minus one major rng skip and graphical differences). Plus with the camera settings being updated in the near future more GCN runners might switch to the all-stars version.

Just a few inconsistencies/nitpicks with the Galaxy Segment -Odme is mainly a Sunshine and Multi Mario Runner -The Pointer isn’t only Bigger, but it seems to be able to grab starbits through some walls and floors -Top runners will not use the Wii, as it is the slowest version. Most commonly, WiiU Virtual Console is used, as it saves about 60 seconds in loads (I think 60 at least). -The Trick shown in Ghostly 1 is pretty irrelevant for high level runners, as they go for a new, more difficult trick called Boolean, which skips the boo powerup Either way this is still a very well put together video

Another thing is that the switch's usb controller ports bring a lot of control options for sunshine and 64 up to scratch with emulators, which being able to use a keyboard and mouse or some janky 10 dollar n64 usb controller.

You can still get 1-star runs on Switch using the first-frame wall kick. However, that’s a frame-perfect trick, and you need to do it a lot.

I know people hate joycons in general because of drifting, but I didn't know they hated them for galaxy in particular. I grew up on galaxy and galaxy 2 (hence my pfp) and I think it's really weird to play with a controller that isn't 2 pieces. My left joycon stick moves by itself sometimes, but it stops when I move it. The only times I'm not moving mario is when the stick moving makes no difference, like during cutscenes and the star select screen.

i can say about BLJ in short: BLJ was patched by an accident, changing Mario's backward speed. (in shindou) After nintendo saw this glitches they said it would be ok to use newer versions.

I grew up with galaxy on the wii, and I definitely don’t regret it, I got to replay Mario galaxy, which is almost an excuse to play it again, galaxy makes me feel MASS nostalgia. AND for the first time I got to get all 120 stars and I’m very proud, I was actually surprised they released these games just because I would only play them on the wii, at least I get to play Mario galaxy 2....

For Super Mario Galaxy you can hold the jump button while spinning to go higher. Meaning the nunchuck spin is do-able on a pro controller when you spin without jump pressed down. I don't know if this feature was in the original but I wanted to point it out.

TL;DR: 3D All-Stars uses the Japanese Rumble Pak (Shindou) Version a.k.a. v1.1 of SM64, which *patched out BLJs* by adding a negative speed cap. Sunshine and Galaxy had no software revisions like that, so all glitches work.

Super Mario Sunshine and Galaxy have the same glitches that are present when Dolphin is running, which suggests that 3D all stars is running Dolphin for those games, and is probably running Mupen64plus for SM64, except each game has a few changes, such as the "PRESS +" on the SM64 title screen. There was plenty of extra space for bug fixes in SM64 because it turned out more powerful than the development team for SM64 expected, so patching the BLJ didn't take much. Another difference is that there are HD graphics. You can already see that when running Mupen64plus, the resolution is better than on a real N64, probably because the 3D rendering forwards to OpenGL instead of going to an emulated graphics card. Because of this, the only things whose resolutions weren't promoted were the UI elements, but better sprites can be designed by making a more detailed one and putting it further back depthwise, so it looks the same size on the screen, but there's a higher resolution, which stays in the emulator but not on the real N64. Sunshine and galaxy probably did similar things. Finally, Sunshine is probably widescreen just because of the renderer drawing stuff outside the border that doesn't normally draw, and UI elements could be transformed to draw out there as well. EDIT: oh I didn't know about the Shindu version. I guess it's just an English translation with a few other changes then.

I find it funny how people think that the blj doesn't exist in the 3d all stars port however if you go to the infinite staircase and have a tas bot do it, it replicates perfectly. They tried to use the repackaged Japanese version of Mario 64 but in reality they just drew the source code and tried to put it in the US version. I actually tried to replicate it actually got some results but it's just too draining

Nintendo had such a missed opportunity about the BLJ, they could have done something different with the patch. for example, if you use the BLJ it could kill you if you hit an object too fast or there can be a new mode to use the BLJ (with some restrictions) of course it was to prevent players from doing things that they aren't supposed to do but at least do something to fill the void.

I’m genuinely annoyed that Nintendo went to the effort to use a version of Mario 64 which patched one of the most beloved glitches in gaming (the BLJ) but still couldn’t be bothered to fix the infamous gramma error by Yoshi “It that really you?” For this All Stars collection!

Every glitches remain intact because Nintendo wanted to remain true to the original. (Except the BLJ that was patched from Shindou version, which the game uses) Nintendo updated to fix bugs that wasn’t in the original game, like dev cubes in SMSS, but everything from the original are left as is, especially to make it friendly for speedrunning. (Except game-crashing bugs) As the All Stars might be more popular for speedrunning, if they updated to fix these glitches, this would affect the speedruns significantly. (Of course, speedrunners hate it) This would be difficult to acheive records before the patch, and can be tricky to revert to desired pre-patch versions.

While its not possible to use BLJ in the Shindou version of SM64, there are still a lot of other tricks and stuff that are possible, just means you can't do 0 Star or 16 Star. But given enough time, I think people will discover new tricks as they keep speedrunning the Shindou version to find ways to skip 30 Star Door and 70 Star door.

If you are playing with a pro controller on galaxy, luigi and mario have different spin heights, if you shake the pro controller they spin higher than if you press the Y button

Um... funny story while I wasn't going to speedrun since even only being 1 year older than officially becoming a teen these are timeless classics to me for the fact my mom kept a 64 console from her childhood that was stolen when I was 8-10 and with it the Mario cartridge and I grew up on Wii also so galaxy is the other one I played so for me it doesn't seem right to rush through the 2 games closest to my heart.
