"Lunatics started in summer of 2002 with only two people, Julio & Willy. Willy & Berto (former club member) owned a car wash in Yonkers, New York. One day Julio who was from Riverdale in the Bronx & owned a C-Town Supermarket in Yonkers showed up to get one of his cars detailed and saw Willy’s 1984 Cadillac lowrider with hydraulics.
Amazed by what he saw, Julio decided on the spot that he wanted a lowrider too, so the next day Julio purchased a 1960 Ford Thunderbird, took it to Kens Kustoms in New Jersey & got a 2 pump 6 battery set up installed. From there Willy & Julio started cruising in Yonkers & bordering Bronx & Manhattan. They soon started meeting more people that had Hydraulics. They then wanted to start a club… they juggled names around until they came up with Lunatics…. the name fit since they where not timid with the switches & they went crazy in the streets.
Lunatics is a cruising club, meaning we cruise the streets. What better place to cruise than the cross roads of the world, Times Square. Lunatics have been cruising Times Square since day 1, every summer & just about every weekend… we are the 1st car club to do it religiously. Now a days you see all types of different car clubs from imports to exotics doing the same thing on social media but we’ve been at it since before the words “social media” even meant anything. 42nd street is our second home. Other clubs are know for going to car shows but we prefer to drive our cars & hit the switches too. We go to shows too but that is not our forté. We prefer being in the streets & mingling with all the tourist answering questions… And what is the number one question we get…… drum roll……. “Are you guys from Cali?” the answer is “NO we are not from California, we are from NY”. Lunatics has members from Westchester, Bronx, Manhattan & Brooklyn. Although there have been other lowrider clubs in NY before us we are probably one of the 1st fully traditional lowrider club in NY, meaning we didn’t evolve from the imports with modified suspension to American classics, we’ve started out as a traditional American Classic Lowrider Club from the beginning.
Lunatics was the 1st lowrider club to ever ship a lowrider from the United States to Europe just to go cruising! We cruised the streets of Belgium, France & Holland with the help of our brothers in Exclusive Lowrider Club Belgium. We rode along with Exclusive Lowrider Club, Majestics Paris & Majestics Amsterdam who showed us love & helped us navigate on foreign turf.
Our rides have been featured in TV shows, news papers, magazines, numerous music videos and yes event Hollywood movies. This is probably the 1st music video featuring a Lunatics Lowrider.
A few more interesting facts about the Lunatics… We have 2 members who are war veterans Carlos V. Desert Storm 1st Armored Division & Martin H. Operation Iraqi Freedom, D.E.S.T., Martin is also a volunteer Fire Fighter in Yonkers NY. We have an IVY League graduate of Wharton Business School Eric O. Craig O. was a break dancer featured in the 1984 classic movie Beat Street."

@@bennynox3364 There's been a Lowriding scene in New Jersey/New York City for awhile now. Actually, every type of car scene there is, can be found in NJ/NYC. You'll see everything from a lowrider, to a Ferrari, to a 70 Chevelle SS and so on. Lowrider Magazine has had major shows here in NJ and in NY. During the summer and spring, you'll see car shows going on all over the place and lowriders usually show up. Winter time you really won't see anything out because of the snow, salted roads and cold. It's not as big as it is in Cali, but there is a following which can't be a bad thing.

@@richardcasarez391 at first lowriders didn't have hydraulics (I think it was late 1950's?). They would just lower the cars by cutting the springs or putting bricks in the trunk. They passed a law making it illegal to drive a car that was too low, so someone found a way to use hydraulics (hidden in a trunk) to lower the car when cruising and returning it to legal height if the cops are around.

Low riders have been arround a looong time,tho other latins as myself back in the mid,and late eighties were part of it,mainly it's been a Mexican/Chicano culture.It brings back some awesome memories for me,and I think it's a shame it spread so slowly,and that nowadays just dont seem to be as much commaradity..it's a hobby that should be embraced with joy.

Chimayo new Mexico is where hydraulics started and invented.Espanola is not only the lowrider capital of the world but also central.Was also published in lowrider magazine and a car from here in chimayo nm is also in California museum. SORRY mr. man talking but lowriding started way back in early 40's my (FATHER rip.) used sand bag's in the trunk of his plymouth to squat the back of his car so it could sit a little lower when he went out cruzing to look for girl's and believe it or not the zuit suit thing was happening a little later and he would dress the zuit suit part because he was chicano himself true story back in L.A. before marring my mother may, god rest her soul before they became a married couple..............
