With 2.3 million Instagram followers and 1.6 million Twitter followers, Lois Van Baarle very well may be the world's most popular illustrator. Lois, also known by her internet name Loish, ( / loisvb and loish.net) spoke with the students at Moore College of Art and Design on October 14, 2021.
Loish is located in the Netherlands and joined the Moore students during their lunch hour via Zoom. This allowed alumni to attend her talk as well. She gave an overview of her work-both personal and client based-her methodology, and also shared valuable information about establishing a presence on social media. After the talk, Loish answered questions and offered sage advice about overcoming creative obstacles, pricing one's work and many other topics.
One student remarked after the talk, "It was amazing to see and hear her! I can't believe she was talking to us! I have literally been following her since middle school.
This event was organized and moderated by Joe Kulka, Chair of Communication Arts; Associate Professor, Illustration at Moore. (moore.edu/abou...) Joe is an award-winning children's book illustrator and author. He has illustrated over 20 books for children. Working for USDA Forest Service, Kulka has created notable illustrations and picture books, featuring national icons Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl. With 30 years of experience as a freelance illustrator, Kulka's professional background spans a variety of sectors, including medical, gaming and entertainment. He has a BFA in illustration from the University of the Arts and an MFA in illustration from the University of Hartford.
