As you see in this video, thoracentesis is a procedure in which a hollow needle is inserted into the pleural space to remove air or fluid, but in chest tube placement, a flexible canula is inserted through the side of the chest into the pleural space for the same goal.

I think it's important to know that chest tube is generally placed after some trauma (making the pleural space so full of fluid or air that the lungs are incapable of inflating and deflating properly) to keep the patient breathing.

I had this done in hospital. I was there for 6 weeks. just looking through my 280 page medical records and came across the name of this procedure. I filled up almost a entire jug of crap from this, the fluid was thin and light brown. shit was scary coming out but it wasn't a painful procedure at all from what I remember. I have a picture on my phone if the jug with the massive amount of brown fluid they drained outta me. i can only imagine how bad it must have smelled.

It's not an ampule, no glass broken. I would keep my wrists together when taking the sheath off the needle...I practice with an old capped bic pen.

I had it done 3 times. First time beside ER bed and 1 litre drained. Wasn’t too bad. The next 2 times was the worst pain imaginable. After 24 hours the pain subsided but the initial pain was horrendous with severe shortness of breath.

I had to have 3 chest tubes and a thoracotomy for empyema and I can tell you the lidocaine for the chest tubes did absolutely nothing and it was the worst pain of my life.

I have not done many pleural tap . But this is very bloody and it looks pulsating when it was initially drained , I am afraid that you hit an intercostal artery which is not uncommon especially that you e were more toward the center
