I believe Ronald may not be very proficient and fluent in Kumam. I'm sorry, but I wish you had interviewed someone more fluent, perhaps from a place like Kaberamaido or Kalaki, which are predominantly Kumam-speaking. For instance, the colour green is referred to as I think - "Lumlum" or "Alulum" ....(Something of the sort) in Kumam. The Kumam speakers in Amolatar often mix Kumam with some Langi. Ronald's Kumam has been influenced by another language, thats Langi, since Amolatar is predominantly a Langi-speaking district. I can't wait for interviews like this in the future, the comparisons are interesting.

Interesting series. I can explain the difference in vocabulary. The Kumam speak a mixture of Luo and Ateso, and infact are considered by the Iteso to be their brothers. All those words that you're missing are actually from Ateso.

The language is mostly Luo in structure and vocbulary, but when we count the number of "Ateker" (the larger group that brings together related tribes from Kenya, Uganda, all the way to Ethiopia and South Sudan), Kumam are counted amongst them. The Langi have managed to get out despite the common origins with Ateker and retaining their clan system and a little vocabulary, their language is now more or less Luo, but the Kumam have not yet. Maybe one day they will, but in these days when languages are influencing each because of technology, maybe it will morph into a completely different language altogether.

Kumam got most of their language from Lango and also from Luo communities from Eastern Acholi e.g Puranga. But the majority of Kumam were of nilohamites origin who were subdued by Luo. They speak a language very similar to Lango. But are almost bilingual I.e 20%Teso +80%Luo

May I add that.. "tol" (which is a "string/rope").. really comes from far, far back when there was still no paper money.. [cash] money [as it is now] was "gaggi" (cowrie shells).. which were stringed together (probably in 10s, 20s.. 50s.. 100s.. etc..) So "tol" was probably a "string" of 100 cowrie shells.. so "tol 1" then was for "mia 1" Just for information.. I speak both [leb] Acoli/Acholi and [leb] Lango with similar fluency.. The Kumam person used for this should have been from either Kalaki or Kaberamaido districts. The guy you used is from the Amolatar district. Their Kumam is shaky, which can be seen in his translations.

I'm Kikuyu but I'm very interested in the languages of Africa in general. Sounds like the Kumam say 10 just like the Turkana, Kalenjin and Maasai in Kenya. 10 is _Tomon/Taman_ in all these languages. 4 is almost the same across all these languages, including Luo. They all say something close to _Ang'wen_ . I have Maasai ancestry on my mother's side, from more than a century ago. As someone said, if we all did genetic testing, tribalism might end because we'd find that we're deeply related. What I'm trying to find out is whether there's _any_ relation between the Luo and languages spoken in West Africa, especially around the Senegambian, Guinea, Mali etc regions. The way their languages sound makes me believe there has to be _some_ really ancient relationship. They sound the way I imagine Turkana language sounds.

Clearly they are the same language. The similarities in sound and meaning of some words determines that. The true comparison would be with people who have long separated from the root of the word like the Luos of West Africa. That is where you will find far and fewer similarities but they will still be there for many words

Kumam are originally not Luo, We are people of the "Atekerin" just like Langi, Teso, Karimojong, Turkana, Masai, Kakwa etc. Kumam and Lango lost their Atekerin dialect to the Luo. Despite the loss of dialect, we still hold similar clan names to other members of the ateker tribes.

The labwor Luo still maintains many of the conservative Luo language elements to a greater extent than all of the other Luo tribes of East Africa contrary to the assertion that they were affected by environmental factors

I think Kumam is a mixture of Luo and highland Like Toposa, Jiye, Otuho of South Sudan and Turkana, Kalenjin, Maasai plus Karimojong of Uganda etc

Kumam came into being as a result of the Luo migration. The Lango Dyang(nilohamites) were affected and lost their original language in favour of Luo. The Luo were not many but affected many as exemplified in other areas as well: The kalenjin and Bantu were also affected etc.. even Arabs were subdued as well as pseudo-Arab tribes in northern Sudan
