I read somewhere that the 2nd movement is sublime...far from the way the concerto has been criticized throughout the years.

Too much arguing and not enough enjoyment. The primary reason for this music is for entertainment. Not to nitpick nuances, which will always just be a difference of opinion, never fact. So lets just agree to disagree and revel in the splendor of our freedom of differing expression.

a concerto that is written for the soloist in mid-range for 90% of the time is a problem which is not overcome in schumann's violin concerto -

What you call 'mannerism' has to do with what then?

@commanderfairfax No, this is really slow compared to others. If he played it any slower, we all would go home! haha

Everyone can listen to any other violinist if he wants to hear less slides or in musical terms portamenti, because those are musical decisions and not all his shifts. Some of his shifts you cant probably detect so easily from just listening. Out of todays top class violinists most of them only use slides rarely because probably they are afraid to sound blatant or disrespectful towards the music. But at times Schumann wrote this music violin playing was much more like this kind of playing where you also put your personality into the music with portamenti or slides, besides bowing and articulation. Slides and portamenti especially are aspects of the music which are rather obvious most listeners. So it is easy to pick on shifts and slides, which sadly nowadays seem to be a not very well thought out "trend". From your comment I can hear that you know that Zimmermann could change them if he wanted. Of course you are right, but he won't. It is his decision to play like that and he would never change it for people who don't really like to listen to his music anyways. He seems to enjoy it like that and I am glad there is still a top class player who is not afraid to repel some people with his own style of playing while staying one of the highest regarded (and probably also paid) violinists for decades already. Have you heard Zimmermann live yet? If you get the chance you should go! He is always great no matter what he plays. If you catch him in duo with Enrico Pace you will be in heaven. Maybe it you meet him at a signing hour you can also ask him nicely if he could tone down his shifts... and please record his reaction for me, I would frame it.

they're mannerisms, which have been a part of zimmermann's playing since day one - and have nothing to do with music
