Honestly I felt they made him waaay too mature from the get go. Part of the charm of his relationship with Suki for me is that they don’t hit off one another immediately because of his misplaced underestimation of her culture, and he grows by being humbled by his experience in Kyoshi Island and learning from that.

I don’t understand why everyone thinking it’s a remake of the og series it’s simple an Netflix adaptation which means it’s not gonna be written or structured the same way which is good in its own way. It’s a good show when you watch it with an open mind and not comparing. I can’t wait for season 2

Show don’t tell, this is a writing issue in the live action that the cartoon was able to do in a short amount of time, just watch the amount of times characters explain things that were flashbacks or just shown more effectively.

Honestly I expected that, just like the one piece series. The idea goes both universe have the same story but different paths and scenarios, (Exp: Marvel comics, animated, live action/MCU) Only reason I really love this it hits me with reality aspects more then drawn out extras like in the show, plus we already know what happens off camera in the show, that's why I LOVE the new fillers

EXACTLY! Stop comparing! It’s an adaptation not a remake. People say that the writing explains too much, forgetting that back then we got episodes one at a time, whereas we got this entire first season all at once! There was a lot of telling in the cartoon but obviously with more episodes you get to spread out that exposition. Even season 1 of the original is not where the strongest writing is. Now that the show has its feet wet, they can see what worked from what didn’t and improve in season 2! I’m here for this show.

For her first major role, Maria Zhang was amazing as Suki! Her performance reminds me of how Miranda Otto portrayed Eowyn in LOTR, strong and badass, beautiful yet vulnerable. Also, I’ve been seeing people here say that Suki was a creep in this episode. But, here’s the thing. When you’re trained as a warrior for your entire life, everything else comes second nature. This happened with the SPARTAN-IIs in the Halo universe, and it’s kind of the same idea here with Suki. So yeah, Suki’s awkward as hell at first, but she learns to adapt to the situation she gets herself in, and everything works out in the end, and with Seasons 2 and 3 being greenlit, things are only gonna get better for Sokka and Suki. 👍🏻

Having Kyoshi take everyone out at the end visually looks cool but removes a lot of character development from Aang. In the original he sees all the destruction he caused from being there and after he’s leaves and safe he turns around to save the village. He came to the island for pleasure but at that point he starts to take his responsibility of being the avatar more seriously.

I like the incorporations of the Kyoshi novel, Kyoshi is one of my favorite characters in Avatar so her getting lore dropped is fun to me. I love that they added in the difference between the average bender and a baseline avatar, as Aang being both extremely talented and powerful on a baseline level makes sense. I loved the Kyoshi appearance as her showing up and handling the fire natation was dope. Last thing to mention is that like how Zhao isn't being shown to be entirely incompetent as a leader.

I honestly think that removing Sokka’s sexism is better for the live action version, which has a more grounded and epic tone. Seeing how the sexism played out in the original series, I’d say that it is a bit too on the nose and may not translate well to this medium. If not handled properly, it would have ended up really preachy.

I don't really see how it was on the nose in the original show. Sokka's basically been the man with the big pants ever since all the able-bodied men left the village. The idea of a woman fighting on the front lines was incomprehensible to him.

I actually do agree with eiden. Looking back at the performance, Kyoshi does get a bit too loud/aggressive at times. She's definitely stern but she's stern in a more simmering way, not in an exaggerated/over the top way. Though I disagree her performance was excessive or too broad. Just a touch in the wrong direction, leaning more into the meme of Kyoshi rather than who Kyoshi actually was.

Feel like they shouldn't have made Sokka and suki immediately attracted to one another. They should have been at odds like in the OG. Dont think it should have been about Sokka being sexist though. Rather something with a little more depth like Sokka just being arrogant. Perhaps he sees how capable the Kyoshi warriors are and is offended that they don't use what they have against the fire nation. Anything other than the almost SMUT writing we saw in this episode lol.

While the show overall was like a 6.5, this was probably my least favorite episode. The Sokka Suki scenes really annoyed me. They didn't even keep a shred of his misogynistic nature. Also, anyone else find it weird that Suki was spying on Sokka while he was undressed? That was kinda creepy. The best thing about this episode was Kyoshi
