Where to start... I first heard Planxty in 1981 or so while living in Miami. There was a weekend radio show highlighting Irish bands. I knew nothing of Traditional Music except for American Bluegrass and Old Timey stuff. What I heard stopped my entire world. I recorded tracks that I liked and within a year I was married, my wife with child, living back in Maryland. To me Planxty represented a long lost culture of folk music as inaccessible as King Arthur's Court. I had been raised on the Beatles, Cream and Led Zeppelin. I found a local record shop that actually had a copy of "The Woman I loved so well" by Planxty... on vinyl. I brought it home a dissolved into a trance of full blown ecstacy while listening to Little Musgrave for the first time on a format fully realized within my own home. Within a few years I possessed albums from De Dannan, The Bothy Band, Planxty and many others. A few more years later I had learned Irish Fiddle and was playing in local sessions. But the highlight of those years was seeing Christy Moore (solo) at the Birchmere Club in Alexandria Virginia on his First (and maybe only) tour of the US. We had front row seats. My wife wrote out a note and placed it on Christy's side-stand at intermission, asking him to dinner the following evening. Amazingly Christy called my wife the next day and said (in deep Irish brogue) "I thank you for the invitation but I have to be off to Chicago tomorrow morning and cannot make it for dinner..." Needless to say my wife was speechless, but that event was seared into our memory forever. Now 35 years later Planxty, plays Little Musgrave in a reunion concert in Dublin. It may have well have been The Beatles playing at the Cavern Club. Thank you Christy and all of the Lads (I've seen them all individually) for the love you have shared with us over the years. I learned that Traditional Music is still alive and that we can flourish within it's embrace for a fulfilling life, rich with music, dance and ancient wisdom.

When Liam Óg comes in on the Uíleann pipes at the "sound ye not your horns lest our coming be betrayed" 'moment' the song takes on a shade of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf. Perhaps even taking it further.

Just an awesome song and so well executed. What a shame only 6,000 people have seen this, the kind of music that tells a story.

Oh, wow, I just came across this video as a result of someone posting on Facebook a recent recording of another Andy Irvine/Donal Lunny song. I was enthralled by this song when I first heard it on the Planxty album that I bought, oh so many years ago. What a beautiful and pure rendition performed by Planxty in this video. Just brilliant!

This was great but, it has been alive in the Blue ridge mountains for centuries, no doubt brought over by early pioneers.Jean Ritchie - Little Musgrave (Child 81) is great example.

Wonderful music. Fascinating history. Folks might be interested in the way this song traveled the ocean and wound up an American folk song. Try to find "Little Matty Groves", sung by Doc Watson. Yes, Little Musgrave became Little Matty Groves.

Matty Groves is just a variation on this..there is nothing specifically American about that variation..it's an English folk song

@@porterhall27 Yes, "Little Musgrave" is an English folk song. And, "Matty Groves" is an American folk song,. What is particularly American about Doc Watson's rendition of "Matty Groves" is Doc Watson! He has been recognized as a wonderful musical treasure. The folk music tradition is inclusive, and folk songs passed down through generations undergo changes. Authenticity is in the folk process itself. I began my original comment by saying, "Wonderful music. Fascinating history". I certainly recognized the beauty of "Little Musgrave" and the excellence of Planxty's rendition. I recommend an excellent book, "Wayfaring Strangers: The Musical Voyage from Scotland and Ulster to Appalachia", by Fiona Ritchie and Doug Orr. Music from England also made a similar voyage.

@@MerleHeidi 'Matty Groves' is simply another name for 'Little Musgrave' also known as Little Musgrave and Lady Margaret'. And they are all English.
