As a Turkish individual, I say; Calling it Istanbul or Constantinople doesn't make it two different places. Its historical value is always the same. What a beautiful music.

I agree. At the time this ud was made it was called Constantinople, so for historical accuracy this is put for this video.

I think the reason why he called it Constantinople and not Istanbul, was because by the time the Ouds made by Emmanuel Venios in 1899 were created, the common name was Constantinople. It was only until the 20s-30s that Istanbul became the common name. In Armenian, we still call the city Bolis, which comes from Gostantnubolis, which is the Armenian translation to Constantinople.

To be fair the city was still called Constantinople in 1899 when Manol made this oud. It wasn't officially named Istanbul until later in 1930. Masterful playing, Mr. Barsamian!

A Wrongly stringed beautiful Manol oud, the 1st string would be bass as d or e as if it is 6th string a forth or fifth to 5th string, up to about 1960’s the bassest string used as 1 st string. But that shows us that it is original and hopfully not revisioned so much !

Serhan AYTAN no my friend. This is how they were strung in the old days. It was called the cheating string.

@@gk-qf9hv Hello, any further information about this older stringing technique and "cheating string"? I'm studying an old 1906 six course oud from tripoli (libya) that has 5 double strings and a single string on the treble side. Any information or reading suggestion would be highly appreciated.

@@alessandrosusca9964 Don't know where to find written sources. But we have in the family 2 Nahats from 1880's, and 2 from 1924 and all had the single treble this way. This was a known fact when I was little kid (amomg old oud players at the time).

@@gk-qf9hv Thank you very much. So that was common both for syrian and ottoman ouds back then. That's interesting!

You caved under pressure and changed the name from Constantinople to Istanbul, even though the name of the city was linked to the dating of the instrument. The challenges of including multicultural voices in the politics of cultural representation are a narrow, winding, dangerous path you must navigate lol

The city got renamed in 1930. Until then the official name was Constantinople/Kostantiniyye. So in 1899 the name was not Istanbul. Please inform yourself about the history of the city.
