luther being almost likeable in season one (SPOILERS)

alright, so i posted this video about two years ago now and i just wanted to say that 1. my opinion of luther as a character has totalllyyyy shifted since then lmao,, it's so weird to look back on this and 2. pretty much all of your comments are so great and have so many valid, interesting points and i've loved reading them!! i haven't gotten around to responding to most of them but they really have helped me understand the nuances of so many of the characters and this show as a whole :D thanks everyone

I think Luther is one of the most interesting characters, psychologically speaking. To have such an abusive father and still defend him and trying so hard to be right and tough and the fact he realises in season two that he was wrong about pretty much everything is such a big character growth

I feel like everyone forgets that Luther was abused by Reginald too. But everyone ignores it because they don't deem it to be "as bad", I've heard a few people say they don't think he was even abused. I liked Luther even in season one, and I like him even more now in season two. I really hope the fandom stops taking characters like Luther at face value. I swear it's like we can't have any sort of nuance in this fandom.

And another thing nobody talks about is that all the characters exhibit toxic behavior as a result of their upbringing in one way or another, but people only ever get mad about Luther.

Luther's self-importance was tuned down significantly to an almost average level in season 2. Luther's physical size was also tuned down significantly in season 2, his body size almost human. Coincidence? i tHiNk NoT-

They made his body look more humane to show that after one year of thinking through his past mistakes he also began accepting his body and feeling more comfortable in it.(While in s1 he tried to cover himself as much as possible in s2 when he fights for jack ruby he doesn't wear a shirt and even lets Allison hold his hand when they meet even though he doesn't wear gloves)With self reflection came and self awareness.

People don't really understand the point of Luther's character is to showcase how people react differently to trauma. In Luther's case, he tried to cling to the past and what good he saw in his father. That really hits home for me personally, it's kind of upsetting that people despise him for this and try to make it out like he's had it easier than everyone else. Reginald literally only put him as No. 1 and 'liked' him so much because he was easy to manipulate and was loyal whenever Reginald showed him an ounce of humanity, but he was used and abused just like everyone else. I say 'liked' because I really don't believe Reginald liked any of them, including Luther. Luther was just....easy to control.

I mean his dad littlerly sent him on the moon so nobody especially him would have to see what he did to him. Everyone else either died or got to live life the way they wanted. He just wanted everything he went through to be worth something the only one who didn'twas 5 because he warped out of his time then got an amazing job for his skills and mindset. And everyone hates luther for what he did with vanya. Yeah it was fucked up but like... littlerly nobody can tell me they wouldn't have done the same thing. He wasn't just thinking he was important. He was trying to save the damn world he went about it the wrong way but only one person ONLY one disagreed with what he thought was the best option. And honestly especially after knowing what she did to their sister it's a serious surprise he didn't kill her when he had the chance and genuinely would've saved the timeline. If allison did save vanya her way the end of the world would still happen because something else would set her off eventually. If he killed vanya yeah everyone would be understandably upset with him but like. He would've saved THE FUCKING WORLD.

I'm indifferent about Luther. He isn't a bad character or person- he has done VERY fucked up things but people have to realize he was abused too and he did sorta think he was doing everything for the greater good. Even though, ya know that shit helped start the end of the world. I'm ✨uncomfy✨ with him being in love with Allison but it's not horrible. I'm really happy they did his character some justice in season two and that he apologised to Vanya.

I feel like people forget that Luther is a very deep character with motivations that are way more complex than "I think i'm right all the time and I want to hurt my siblings". Because he was the last one to escape the abuse, it's still very much fresh and during the first seasons he has not even had the time to process the fact that he was abused. He doesn't even realise! Reginald was very strict on him, most of the times he was taught that he had to be the leader, the strong one, the one who never faltered, to disregard his feelings (think about the body dysmorphia) for the 'greater good'. And he has never lost that aspect. He did not want to hurt his siblings (he could have very easily killed them in those moments mind you), he was convinced that wat he did was for the greater good; saving the entire world. People often forgive the other characters for making mistakes: alison being quite the bitch in s3, victor for ending the world multiple times, klaus for being a whiny little shit 80% of the time, diego for his hero-complex that has put the others in danger multiple times, and five for being a straight up arsehole that insults people whenever he gets the chance. They get forgiven because 'they love their siblings'. Meanwhile Luther, the one who is arguably most traumatised (after five) because he was the one to last escape and he is the one stuck in a body that he hates and did not choose for, becomes the scapegoat for many people even though he's such a sweetheart. Even his own siblings constantly insult and belittle him! And yet he would still do anything to protect them, how can you not love the guy?

Luther was pretty good in season 2, he did work with Jack Ruby and in a StripClub. He felt miserable and happy at the same time when he found out that Allison got married. He tried making up with Vanya even if she didn’t remember anything . He was pretty dumb when he met both of the 5s. I’m still pretty pissed of that he closed of Vanya’s airway so that she passed out, but the love of his life got her throat slit by her

luther was just dumb to me in season 1 but i feel like he got better in season 2. he helped five and was there for diego. he really was there for his family so i liked that. i honestly feel bad for Luther because like nobody realized how hard it was for Luther to find out that there was no point for him to be on the moon because he really trusted his dad and stood up for him. yeah he did talk about it a lot which was annoying but it was super hard for him. in conclusion he not my favorite but he’s likable

aside from the horrible thing Luther did at Viktor (Vanya) I think people hate him for unnecessary things. Like he constantly referring back to him being on the moon for 2 years. Yes 5 had it worse. But that doesn’t mean his trauma is not important, I mean imagine being isolated from everything and everyone for 2 years to find out it was for nothing. That would break you as well.

Honestly, I've got no beef with any of the characters - Luther included. I mean, yes, he fucked up - but the dude was probably given a superiority complex by his father. Him and Diego probably were put under more pressure by Reginald, growing up. I mean, all of them were put under way more pressure than a child should be, but being One and Two, both of them probably faced the most. You're not gonna know exactly how to act as an adult when you were given a skewed upbringing. And as for Luther potentially being seen as selfish; he does care for his siblings. He probably just hasn't figured out yet how to come out of his own head.

He's always been my favorite. I didn't like how they reduced his character to a comic relief in season 2 instead of focusing on his actual redemption arc but I guess it's better than how he was treated in season 1. Having watched season 3 and finding out that him being on the moon wasn't useless and he was actually unknowingly guarding the most important "thing" to his father was bittersweet. Now he knows he was sent to the moon not because his father set him aside all those years ago but he actually had a purpose. Also having someone marvel at the fact that he lived in the moon is a big win for him. So glad Sloane seemed to be genuine and not just another Allison.

I love Luther honestly😭 He's not even that bad a guy. No one really blames Allison for manipulating her daughter and many other people just so she could become famous. Or Klaus’ drug addiction even though it constantly harms himself and those around him too. Literally all the siblings have done things with mistakes.. well maybe except Ben but we’ll see for sure in Season 3 I guess.

That scene was insanely triggering for me as someone who's been in solitary confinement when I was in a psych ward. If you go to someone for help and they lock you up, don't even try to listen to you, that's seriously messed up. I see a lot of myself in Vanya, just because you only look at the surface and see she's "dangerous" doesn't mean Luther was in the right for betraying her trust like that.
