Masterly lesson, you have not let out any detail. Teachers generally do not teach the student this way because it is so small the percentage of students today who would take the time to understand and implement. I hope that students appreciate this lesson, can access to your video.

Thanks again Jack! today while playing recuerdos everything seemed to fall in place. My tremolo finally feels steady and smooth. I think your statement about the arm and hand working as one unit and the thumb operating independent, really did it,, and about keeping the hand steady over the string being played tremolo. Really wonderful to finally have control , now I can really experiment with dynamics and tone colors! I'm loving this. You are a very god teacher , wish you lived in Tucson, haha.

Yes, thanks Jack. I have developed a few exercises myself. One thing I do is I figure, "well I might as well make an exercise out of a piece that I play" For instance I would take two or three bars from Recuerdos and use them as my "exercise". I choose, of course, the problematic areas of the piece. I like your approach and will add them to my practice. However, a fine tremelo for me remains elusive. Seems to be one of the hardest things. I hope it is not my nail shape, but I often wonder. It is great that you explain about the importance of right hand and right arm relaxation though, as I agree that this is ESSENTIAL and one I still need to work on a little. Looking forward to GFA in LA!

Nice lesson, like always Jack!.The only thing I would add is that you must be very careful not to make the basses sound louder. Usually this happens because, since the thumb is the power house of both hands, people unconsciously tend to make the bass line a bit louder.

Thank you. Let me know if you have any questions. Try to be especially aware of tension in your biceps when you play tremolo. The tendency is to pull backwards with the biceps which usually compromises your right hand position and definitely causes problems with finger movement.

How does one get rid of the nail clicks? Does that come with speed, so that they are no longer noticeable? One can also hear buzzing in Segovia's playing, and of course, squeaking noise in the left hand, but I am told that is unavoidable. Yet we are made to believe that the more expensive guitars are virtually free of string buzzing. Didn't Segovia rate the most expensive and thus buzz free instrument?
@jacksanders32106 жыл бұрын
Hi Patricia, You bring up some good issues, and hopefully my thoughts will answer your questions. First of all, I think nail clicks are usually where the player touches the nail before touching skin, rather than simultaneously, so it's a question of accuracy. Every time you pick up the instrument this should be something that you address very carefully - never expect good nail/skin touch to happen automatically. Buzzes are complicated...on the one hand, if your action is really high to avoid buzzes, then you have to squeeze your left hand super hard which causes all sorts of problems and can cause serious injury. I advocate a bit lower action than many guitarists as a way to maximize the ease with which you use both hands, plus, I've come to believe that the top 10% of a guitar's volume is best used only very sparingly. When I listen to other guitarists, I rarely enjoy it when a person plays loud - maybe that works for pianists, singers, and most other instruments, but not so much with the guitar. Good playing action isn't necessarily a question of the cost of the instrument...I can't tell you how many top-priced instruments that I've seen that had what I consider unplayable high action. In his later decades, Segovia favored Ramirez guitars, which can be considered low-buzzing guitars, but also tend to have rather large necks that often create difficulty for most players.

I find myself struggling with tremolo especially in Requerdos de l"alhambra! The first part couldn't be more fluent and comfortable but the instance I enter the 2nd part, my tremolo technique collapses all together as I start to feel my right hand getting stiff, all the way up to my shoulder. At this point I just struggle to complete the piece!
@jacksanders32107 жыл бұрын
Experiment with stopping at the end of every measure, relax your hand, arm and shoulder, then play the next measure. After each measure where you stop and relax, be sure that when you proceed, your entire arm feels 100% relaxed and rejuvenated. Then, play through it again relaxing at 2 measure intervals and then perhaps 4 measures. Hopefully this will reverse the "association" of tension that you have developed and replace it with and association of relaxation. Let me know how this goes. Also, be sure to feel the weight of your right arm on the guitar at all times. Good luck!

Thank you very much for the advice. It'll definitely try it and hopefully get some results. :) I'll try to reply again if it goes well!

How come I don't get volume out of the high E string like I do with the other strings? Seem I have to hit hard with AMI to get volume.
@jacksanders321010 жыл бұрын
Without seeing your hand position it is difficult to say for sure, but I am thinking that your right hand position might not be centered over the string properly. It may be that the movement of your fingers should be more under your hand, not as much in front of your hand. Try practicing tremolo on each of the 6 strings where your thumb and three fingers all play the same string then focus on pivoting from your elbow to change to the next string.

Well. I'm here playing a little slice of Recuerdos de la Alhambra and focused on the behavior of my biceps. This is the normal stress and my arm rests on the guitar (as always urge my students) There is just something that worries me. My ring finger because it does not use it, it takes off a bit of the other fingers, and remains somewhat stiff. Sometimes I would have incorporated into my right hand technique. Excuse my english please.

Spent the day practising tremelo and listening to your tutorial quite a few times. Very helpful indeed! I look froward to the next lesson , you mentioned another segment on tremelo? Do you ever play in Tucson , we have a great guitar society here. THanks again!

Mark Daniels Hi Mark, Tucson is a wonderful "guitar city" and I had the chance to perform there a couple of years ago for the Piatigorsky Foundation. I'll make another tremolo video as soon as I can free up a block of time.

Are you coming to Wenatchee valley college? I'm currently a student there and I play classical guitar (nowhere near as good as you). It's funny because I thought of this technique back when I first started playing, but I convinced myself that it was too hard for any human to do. You have re-convinced me that I know absolutely nothing about guitar. Hope to see your concert at WVC!

Selene, Could you please contact me at: sandersgtr@aol.com so that I can help you figure out what the problem is? It may be that your extensor muscles are tight and you are moving too much from the middle knuckle. This sometimes results in "reactionary" movement from the small finger.
