i watch these before bed, and not in a “theyre boring” way. In a “these are so well made, interesting, and relaxing” way

Mary was mentioned quite a bit in today's sermon and I actually have time to appreciate a mid length video in peace. 🙃 I absolutely bet this piece is based on apocrypha. I can't imagine Mary was ever dressed like this in her life, but I appreciate the way it got me thinking about her life. The broach with her initials reminded me that I don't even know her full name! And it was interesting to speculate about her formative years.. The Spain version (by Juan de Roelas) is much more attractive and believable to me. Go figure he didn't mind keeping her dark features but people who probably look more like her made her more... porcelain. If she ain't broke, don't fix her!

I know it's not intentional, but on the thumbnail the halo makes quite a trippy visual effect when being scrolled 😁

Well, the tradition of taking Jewish children to the temple to be raised in it was not necessarily for preparing you to be the Mother of God. Did this experience served Mary? Definitely, but not sure it was for that intention precisely that the children were taken to the Temple. More likely because it provided a great education on the Jewish faith and a great education all around

What I enjoy about this videos is the treatment of colonial iberoamerican art that for the most part has been excluded from the canon of western art by anglosaxon/north atlanticists authors and commentators. Iberoamerican art, literature and music both colonial, modern and contemporary remains an unexplored chapter of western cultural history.

Do not call it colonial. That is a misnomer. It’s “arte virreinal.” Art of the viceroyalty. Spain did not have colonies. Using that word is forcing an equalizer to the real colonies of GB and France etc…
It's complicated: a painting of the Virgin of Guidance
