I am a UL backpacker so much of what you have I would never consider, that said in the winter I go in a completely different direction and it's all about warmth and comfort. I ditch my canister stove and go MSR and white gas, it's the tool for the job especially if your melting snow. I do love my down for sure, you can never have to much down gear. I love my down socks.

I haven't seen that little table before. Handy, but more than 1/2 lb and $60. I would add the Flextail Tiny Pump with light, for blowing up sleeping pad, and the light can be used as lantern.

There's also the Cascade Wild table that's only $15 and a few ounces. It's just not as strong. But a great option. I use the Tiny Pump X for every trip! Love that thing!

Backpacking chairs are right up there with epoxy river tables and live edge furniture. When will the trend end? Remember when charcuterie used to be called a deli tray at the grocery and it was affordable?

I'd love to have me some down booties. I can't see using the ISO butane lantern, especially when UCO candles are so cheap and don't use up your cooking fuel. It is nice to have a light source other than your headlamp. I rarely make a fire when backpacking, the candle makes the campsite more cozy.

I use an insulated lunch bag from the dollar store, but stick my whole pot in it, as I don't like plastic touching my food when heated - I have an inoperable brain 🧠 tumor remnant stuck in my head and don't need to feed it chemicals leached from plastic, BPA-free or otherwise 👍😝🤙

I bike-pack with a Burley Nomad trailer. My luxury items are a camp chair, small table, UNO candle lantern, separate rainfly, down booties (for cold weather), a waterproof padded picnic blanket for inside the tent, a small indoor/outdoor doormat for the tent entrance, a pocket shower, and a sarong (for showering and changing clothes when around-ish others).

I’m just now getting back into backpacking after years of absence and I also wondered why all these people seem to use canister stoves in the snow and cold weather, rather than a nice white gas stove. Liquid fuel stove is definitely the way to go for very cold weather or snowy outings.
@BackcountryExposure
@BackcountryExposure Жыл бұрын
@@Dave_Outside I don’t disagree with you. However, I believe most people get out on 1, maybe 2 true cold weather trips a year and getting a stove like a whisper lite doesn’t make sense for a lot of people.

Agreed! However, I found a cool device on amazon that converts your sit on top stove into a remote stove, and has a secondary valve on top, so you could run your stove and the lantern at the same time! I'll be sharing about it on the channel at some point.

I don't consider down pants a luxury item in the winter. I guess you can get by without it by being in your sleeping bag. But if you're backpacking in winter, insulated hiking pants do not have enough insulation to keep me warm once at camp.

I’ve never considered my stove as a luxury item. But I can see how having a higher quality stove can add to the overall experience. The only true luxury item I carry is my Kindle. I love being able to read in the shelter after a long day. Do you think the insulated sac would work to protect electronics from the cold? I always put mine in the Goot box of my bag, and I don’t like it haha. It’s not very comfortable to have batteries such bumping into my feet all night.
@BackcountryExposure
@BackcountryExposure Жыл бұрын
I hadn't considered that for batteries and not sure it would be as effective as having it in your quilt or bag. But I agree, I don't love having batteries and a water filter banging around my sleeping bag.

I was hoping that there would be more about the lantern (Bad habit of looking at the thumbnail and not reading the video title) I've been considering picking one up for car camping instead of hauling the large old fashioned white gas colman lantern. For backpacking, I love bringing a UCO candle lantern. I have two of the original versions and just picked up the mini one. I picked up the mini because tea lights are much cheaper than the UCO candles - looking forward to trying it out soon. I know some people will use them to manage condensation in a tent, but I don't want to take the risks. Instead they are perfect for times you don't want to build a fire, but would like to watch a flame dance or for a little extra light around the campsite. I was surprised how much light the original candle lantern gives off and it's even better when you use the reflector. Although, I'm thinking about DIY'ing a reflector out of a soda can to make it easier to pack. Since I DIY a lot of my meals, I've been using an insulated lunch sack for a while. I pick them up at the dollar store. The table is a must have. I DIY'd a spike table similar to the Schwarze Biene tables, but the table part is an inexpensive lightweight cutting board. I need to make another one with something that I can put my stove on. The table is nice to have next to your chair so that your cup isn't sitting on the ground.
@BackcountryExposure
@BackcountryExposure Жыл бұрын
Yeah just a quick look on this video. However, I will have a full review of the lantern in the next month or so. I may pick up another one like it for comparison for that video, so hold tight. ha ha. I haven't used candles ever on my trips, but have looked at the UCO ones several times.

Why do you prefer a heavier and more expensive chair than the Rei flex lite or helinox zero?
@BackcountryExposure
@BackcountryExposure Жыл бұрын
The design aspects of the Skyline UL make it a more enjoyable chair for me. The sitting height of the Flexlite is 11" and the Chair Zero is 8.5", which honestly is fine, but after using the Skyline UL, I enjoy the 15" sitting height of the chair way more. The design of the legs is better too. The slight bend on the back legs really help the chair from sinking into soft ground and sand. Overall, I just find it to be a much more comfortable chair to use.

Been looking at down pants for camp ... wondering how they hold up especially to embers from a fire or abrasions from collecting firewood. Are the pockets on those pants actually insulated or lined as well?
@TZsHikingMyOwnHike
@TZsHikingMyOwnHike Жыл бұрын
The fabrics of down garments tend to be lightweight so they do not do too well with embers or snagging brush. I only put my down gear on after my camp is all set up and my camp chores are complete so I do not have to deal with anything that can damage the garments. They may be considered a luxury item, but they are soooooo worth it in winter/cold conditions.

I consider my Goosefeet Down booties as WANTED/REQUIRED/MANDATORY equipment. They are definitely a "gamechanger". I've carried & worn my 100% Overfill Goosefeet Down Booties for >2 years & I also slip into my Down Booties at home on a cold night. My feet only need to warm the Down bootie interiors not the entire sleeping bag's foot box. Spend the few extra bucks & get your pair with 100% overfill. I have been known to attach HOT HANDS chemical foot warmers to the bottom of my socks & then slip into my Goosefeet Down booties & then crawl into my sleeping bag. I do have the separate Goosefeet waterproof outer with sole that I can slip over the Down booties when I want to walk around camp. Once you buy & start using a canister stove with a regulator, you'll never want to do without. I've made my own Koozies out of reflectix for my 750ml Toaks Titanium cup & 450ml Toaks cup. The Koozies keep my Peak Refuel meals HOT HOT while they are re-hydrating, hot food right down to the last sporkful. Warm Regards from bone dry Reno, Nevada
