I worked in waste water and drinking water for 30 years. If treated properly the effluent discharged is usually as clean or cleaner than the body of water. Our effluent always met a standard of quality higher than the river water we discharged into.

I like the earthships method of dealing with waste they have septics but the leach field is a botanical cell. It is protected but there are decorative plants on top and they maintain the waste in a way that it can break down without those kinds of issues.

You Guys Are Amazing, I am fascinated with your knowledge of the Bio/practical use of outdoor toilets, I am moving to a place where sewage systems are not properly in place so I am very thankful for this healthier alternative 🤨thanks

What about using EM1 in the loo (Essential Micro-organisms) its like probiotic for the earth, easy to make & helps break down stuff twice quick. I have used it in my compost that was going rancid & it completely fixed it. No smell ! Your loo wont smell if you put EM 1 in it & it will turn te poop into soil much quicker. In some countries EM1 is sprayed on to the outdoor pools where sewage is stored . There are very good videos on KZbin about it. You don't have to be too fussy about how you make it either like some sites suggest, no need for sterilizing equipment etc, it works any way you make it. Also look up Bokashi, a similar process. My plants are lush, green & bigger than they were after spraying them with it & mixing it in the soil.

Ground water is 260 ft. in my neck of the woods. Not too worried about pee. Poop in old-school outhouse not a problem. Every homestead has its own way to deal with waste.
@dougmc6666 жыл бұрын
The part about contaminating ground water is a totally imaginary problem. People are the only creatures that avoid a dump on the ground and despite that well water is still considered one of the very best sources. Studies of effluent introduced to ground water show that it's clean after traveling 200 yards through the soil. This is more of a permit issue, if you add water it's then called sewage and that is highly regulated.

Wastewater treatment plants are the only practical alternative for towns and cities. Not perfect by any means, but run all the way to tertiary processes,the effuent is perfectly safe for receiving waters. Even just secondary treatment is a better choice than just spreading human waste on vegetation. In rural settings, your system is fine. But it's not a workable alternative for large groups of people.
@DeniseJackson96338 жыл бұрын
Modern wastewater treatment plants employ processing methods that are environmentally responsible. It's a fascinating industry.

And a very good way to earn a living. I just retired on a decent pension after 25 years in the field. After working in construction and traveling from job to job, being home every night gave me a chance to be a part of my kids lives. The pay was much better in construction, but I was at every football, soccer,baseball and fastpitch game my children competed in. The fact that I coached them for years also had a little something to do with it. lol! I wish more young people would look at careers in water and wastewater treatment fields. The average age of a treatment plant operator in the United States is 48 years old. There are going to be lots of opportunities for employment if someone is interested in these types of jobs.

actually sewer systems can be run correctly that remove all contaminants and too sterile to be added back to streams without an additive to equal quality of that stream. this keeps down stream fish kills from happening. Using a pit like old scout camps did for years is ok when treated with lime... the best for larger groups is septic. with field lines.
@flowerchild7772 жыл бұрын

@Rick_Sanchez_C137_7 жыл бұрын
Really? Leech fields in Michigan not neutralizing the waste???? OF COURSE NOT, it is too cold for at least five months out of the year; the bacteria die and nothing is breaking down the waste. Then when spring comes you have to wait a month for the bacteria to grow, and first freeze of fall kills all the bacteria again.... most leeching fields are too shallow in the cold north. Great video.

Very good video! Thanks! One way to prevent anaerobic pathogens seeping in and polluting the ground and groundwater, is to make sure the system stays Aerobic....which, if one has a septic tank and leach field, is important! A second method, is to make sure there are red worms in the compost, which help abate coliforms. A very good book, is "Solviva"; Anna Edy has devised 2 ways to do composting toilets which are well-contained....one of which is a fairly closed system..no moving or emptying of containers...that system is entirely segregated from the ground and ground water. She's the one who discovered the great job worms do, to abate coliforms.

Urine is not sterile, even before it comes out of you and gets contaminated by your skin. Bacteria are present at low levels in the urine of healthy people not suffering from a urinary tract infection, Evann Hilt of Loyola University of Chicago reported May 18 at a conference of the American Society for Microbiology. Now, Hilt and her colleagues are figuring out what bacteria make up the normal bladder community and whether a change in that community might trigger urinary problems. Where am I suppose to dump it?
@itsno1duh8 жыл бұрын
The environment is filled with beneficials that help convert urine to the basics needed for plant growth pretty fast but as they highlight in the video don't repeatedly drench an area. The compost pee pile is a rapid turnover system that can be habitually used but not water logged, it takes beneficial microbes AND oxygen. Having done this a decade I must say the angst lessens as you see the benefits. I can barely bring myself to use splashy, vaporous(all surfaces contaminated from flush air!) and wasteful sewer connected toilets now.

She said something about legionnaire's disease. Maybe there is a pathogen that can be lurking when water is not heated long enough using that wood stove. The compost they peed on, heats to a certain temp naturally. Water pipes under the compost are then heated, then the warmed water is used for showering. She did say it wasn't quite warm enough, which is why the stove was used. Not understanding about the reason legionnaire's is an issue, unless it's found in the steam or vaporous emissions.

I'm fairly certain nearly everyone has peed outside at one point or another. Also, since Israel probably didn't have indoor plumbing, and since He did spend a decent length of time in between cities that might have been Romanized and contained indoor plumbing or at least bathhouses, Jesus most likely did pee outside.
