Vinohrady is one of Prague's most prestigous and also most beautiful locations. And the local residential area hides architectural pearls that everyone would probably like to live in.
Most of us, however, can only dream of something like this because of the astronomical prices of the houses here. In this episode of the Live Prague series, we will at least take you to the villas that are definitely worth seeing in Vinohrady.
Villa František Pokorný, Dykova 4
The owner of the chocolate factory František Pokorný did not deny his profession even on the façade of his villa. It is decorated with an element resembling a chocolate bar.
Libro's Villa, Hradešínská 32
František Albert Libra, a promising First Republic architect, managed to design 16 family houses and 17 semi-detached houses in the local district during his short lifetime, which make up the so-called Svoboda (Freedom) Colony. He also built a villa that also houses a music room where he held concerts for his neighbours as a talented cellist.
Kotěra's Villa, Hradešínská 6
Not far from Libro's villa is the house of another famous architect - Jan Kotěra. His style influenced many of his followers, including Josef Gočár. Although Kotěra's buildings are less ornate compared to Libra's, they complement each other perfectly in the neighbourhood.
Kolben's Villa, Hradešínská 1
The villa of the industrialist Emil Kolben was also known as the Red Villa because of its colour - but today there is no trace of this colour. The building will be renovated in the near future, and it is planned to build a Kolben archive or a library with an exhibition space.
Double House of the Čapek Brothers, Bratri Čapků 28, 30
In the left part of this semi-detached house lived Josef, in the right part Karel. Every Friday, the legendary Fridays gathered in the villa. A museum is planned in the Charles half, which is to be opened in 2026 and in which you can see, for example, the chair that was intended for T. G. Masaryk.
Šalounova vila, Slovenská 4
In the villa of the famous sculptor Ladislav Šaloun you will find, among other things, the Slovácké jizba, where he met every Sunday with leading artists, the so-called Nedělníky. The northern part of the villa is used by the Academy of Fine Arts, another part provides space for seminars, therapy, coworking or bodywork.

Ivo Rittig's House Complex, Benešovská 18
The complex of two villas, which are complemented by a tennis court, underground garages or an indoor swimming pool and surrounded by a three-metre high wall, belongs to the controversial businessman Ivo Rittig. It is undoubtedly the largest "mansion" in Vinohrady.
Villa of Vladimír Slavik, 38 Benešovská Street
The villa, which belonged to the rector of Charles University, Prof. Slavik, was confiscated during the previous regime. Although it was returned after the revolution, disagreements between the co-owners resulted in the sale of the house in 2011. Since then, the villa has fallen into disrepair and no one knows the answer to the question of what the new owner intends to do with it.

Semi-demolished villa, Na Šafránce 12
One of the villas of architect F. A. Libra in 2013, under strange circumstances, Prague 10 sold it for only 16 million crowns. Five years later, excavators arrived at the dilapidated house (according to the owner at the time, "by mistake") and began demolition. Fortunately, the authorities intervened, but the house remained a mere torso. What will happen to the villa next is not entirely certain. The new owner - Nosta Herz - has not yet fully disclosed its plans.
