Apparently the shows creator, Dana Terrace lost her dad at a young age and this episode reflects the difficulties she had processing such a terrible loss. Also the tree Luz and Amity have their heart-to-heart under is the tree that was created when they defeated Grom with their enchanting dance in season 1.

I legitimately love how well they write conflict with Luz and Amity's and relationship in this show. So many lesser shows would draw out the conflict for an multiple episodes at least and double-down on the melodrama. But the writers handle Lumity's conflicts with such tact and care. Like in Coven's Day Parade, Amity chooses to wait and talk to Luz, instead of watching the video behind her back. And in this episode too. Despite Luz's mistake and despite Amity's justifiably hurt feelings, Amity doesn't shut out Luz. Amity knows how Luz can struggle to open up about personal business and is willing to let Luz explain herself. It shows the value of good communication in a relationship and it's SUCH a breath of fresh air compared to some other animated couples
@lava32566 ай бұрын
I really need to take a note on how this show does writing and character development
@NakanaiJP6 ай бұрын
I agree with you that there's a lot of care put into the writing of their relationship, and I love Lumity to death. But it does bother me a little that Amity is so accepting of having been shut out by Luz multiple times. In Follies, Luz promises to stop doing it, but she never keeps that promise. Like I said, I love them to death, but I can't help but see that as a fundamental weakness in their relationship. Edit: I do want to add that I understand why Luz does what she does, and I'm very sympathetic to her feelings. I just want Amity to be a little firmer about her needs as a co-equal partner, rather than immediately forgiving Luz engaging in the same behavior after having pledged not to.

One thing to remember with Edric is that he's trapped in the same life as Amity. His mother rules the house, while his father is inattentive. Edric has no clear skill in Abombination magic, and Odallia seems to prioritize Almity over the twins. He likely isn't saying all those things because he's being aloof, but because he genuinely has a really bad inferiority complex or possibly even Impostor Syndrome.
@odinoco6 ай бұрын
I'd say the way he looks without the stone reaffirms that notion, he doesn't even bother with his looks, he just has a facade for the world that he feels is beyond him.

You're absolutely right to point out that Luz and Amity are meant to be a parallel to Eda and Raine. Both high school sweethearts who started out as rivals, one a 'wild' witch and the other initially associated with the covens before becoming disillusioned with that path. Both have a nature spot as their signature relationship location - the field of flowers for Eda/Raine and beneath the Grom Tree for Luz and Amity. Eda and Raine's relationship broke down because Eda couldn't confide any of her problems with Raine, instead bottling up her emotions and lying that everything was fine. Eventually Raine couldn't take it anymore (And I don't blame them for that- you can only help people if they want to be helped.) Luz almost makes the exact same mistake here, but thankfully she and Amity work past it. This habit of putting up a front that everything is fine, and particularly of self-blame for things beyond her control and downplaying her own positive achievements (See her behaviour in the first episode of season 2) is the key to understanding Luz's character. With the new knowledge that she's a grieving, LGBT, likely neurodivergent kid being raised by a loving but struggling single parent, her social ostracisation at her human school suddenly has much more dark and depressing implications. The fact that she was happy to run away to a dangerous fantasy world, but terrified at the idea of interacting with other humans her own age (As you pointed out in Vee's episode). Luz is a way more complex protagonist than a lot of people give her credit for.

There were theories since the first episode about where Luz's father was, the leading theory being that they were divorced, especially after "Yesterday's Lie" when Camila asked Luz "Did you really hate living with me that much?" Some people even thought he might be somewhere in the Demon realm somehow. The idea that Manny had passed away was brought up now and then, but most fans dismissed it because it would be "too dark for a Disney show." Then this episode aired and punched us all in the heart.

Hands down one of my favorite episodes of the show, and the one where they use the Lumity romance the best way. There's a million shows/books/whatever out there where the relationship is always about getting together, or being split apart by something and then getting together again. But in this, there was no hint that the conflict would ever end the relationship. Instead, they just took a moment, got their heads clear, and then worked out the solution together. This is the episode I always think about when I talk about wanting more stories of being -being- together, rather than merely -getting- together.

A bunch of other comments have already covered the meat of this episode. But as a side thing this episode is where we get to see more of Alador's personality (which nice to reflect in dialogue that many of these adult characters went to school together and know each other, the Clawthorne family are apparently up there, Lilith was a coven leader for the Emperor's coven, and her parents well known in the Palisman industry), but back on the personality from here on out Alador strikes me as standing out from the flash back from when Willow and Amity had their falling out as children, at the time Alador came across as just another snobby rich guy, when his shadow was like, "Blight's only associate with the strongest witches".

This is going to be a big hot take, but Luz was still in the wrong. Her father passed and today was a special day for her and her mum and that is heartbreaking. BUT She does not get a pass on not communicating that with anyone and for causing situations that ruin other people's plans on what their shorter term dreams are. This sort of thinking of someone being not ok and not expressing in it's full gravity, WILL ruin relationships and cause more longer term stress and anxiety.

Reaching Out is my favorite episode for how it handles relationships. I probably don't have the exact right words to explain it well but it gets everything right that so many shows screw up, COMMUNICATION AND LISTENING. I have always hated shows that have romance for the forced drama. The Owl House is the first show I have seen without any of those problems and when there is drama it is handled in a healthy manner rather than yelling and violence with a clear person in the wrong and person in the right.

@Aliciaxlife There is something you missed big time with the beastkeeping twin. They weren't just down on themselves due to emo-phase teen lack of confidence, you have to take in in account their previous appearances and the way Amity sometimes talks about achievements. It is clear they are being discouraged from even trying to do anything outside of their Family's line of magic (this is really expressed with her interaction with Willow). It's a two-fold situation. One, He comes from a Father who is an Abomination coven holder, and an Oracle holder. Oracle holders are pretty dangerous when you think about it. Also this makes it clear that their Father is super strong to be a title holder for long enough for Amity to look up and desire such an achievement in the first place. Two, it is clear that going outside their Parents coven is not only discouraged, but dismissed and looked down upon. This creates a soup of not wanting to try hard, due to lack of praise and encouragement.

It's not bad for one parent to be more assertive then the other however if you let them completely take the driver's seat and forget that you're also a parent then it can get very toxic. And what's her face is definitely not a great person, being particular about what color your child's hair is next level controlling.
