I have a fluid mechanics background, and I have almost zero ideas about crystal structures. I think they draw the line out of the cube to show that it can exist as any length. A unit vector describes the slope therefore the red line is just a part of a direction.

Dear ma'am, if we are asked to draw the crystallographic direction given by the Miller indices [333], then shouldn't this direction be the same as that given by the Miller indices [111]
