II used to listen this by Brook Benton when I was in Viet Nam. I never understood the song until 9/11 happened. Three days after 9/11 happened I was at the LA. County and a singer at the kareoke both was singing the song with his eyes closed. I was crying like a baby. Then I understood the meaning of the song fifty some years after I heard it in Viet Nam for the first time.

I've only heard Randy Crawford sing this song but this craftsman reinforces what a beautiful song Tony has written.

I have to say Jack Pearson made the song his, it is entirely different than the way Tony Joe White did it. It is different than Brook Benton too, that is the way it should be, it is soulful and if all you can do is copy it exactly then that is okay but this is just different.
