Sang Shenandoah in an a cappella quartet in high school. At a solo & ensemble competition. Way back in 1981. I was the baritone. Not sure I was all that great. But we, as a group, did well. And we had fun. There are few things more joyful than singing with other people. When you hit those harmonies live & in real time. Those moments are among my favorite memories.

It's great to see that you just posted. Melissa, when you have the opportunity, read Pablo Neruda's book, Odes to opposites... memorize, odes to the present. Yes memorize it. 😅 don't make that face. Also, and this is a total total compliment.... I love Yacht Rock. Michael mcdonald, The Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, Christopher cross, etcetera... So, again this is a compliment... but you're kind of dressed like a "Yacht Rock Chola"... you're not edgy and hard, you're dressed in earthtones... and it's inviting and warm. Being nervous at a recital is a good thing, and akin to being in front of any kind of audience. My first piano recital was in 1987 at Kalamazoo College at age six. There were nerves then and that was just for a quick little ditty from the Suzuki piano method that I had to remember. Mozart I was not! My last recital and departure from piano lessons was in 1992 when I wanted to play the "Air Man" theme from Nintendo Entertainment System' Mega Man 2 video game. I memorized the electronic music after playing the game/levels and could certainly play the repetitions and loops. Unfortunately, we students were tasked to write out our own musical notes on paper sheets and present those to the teacher during the recital performance. I deemed 'Air Man' too complicated to write in physical notations at the time and played "Go Tell Aunt Rhody (No. 8) instead. Ah, memories! Flash forward 30+ years and video game cover bands are everywhere now and yes, I can still play the Air Man theme. :-) On the topic of removing shoes in a fifthly house/apartment per the request of an owner. Spot on correct! Leave them on and defy the owner regardless. Nobody wants to walk through spilled ramen or worse on the floor. PDX sounds like it will be a fun gig! It's been awhile since I explored the sights and scenes downtown. The first memory I have driving into PDX on a hot, sunny afternoon in mid-August 2015 was the John Williams 'Star Wars' suite playing on my Subaru's FM radio as I passed a local park. I turned and noticed a woman who was clearly goth and quite stereotypical "Portlandia" in style walking a rather large black cat on a leash with a spiked pink collar. It was such a vibe! That city is hilarious, wish I could see your set there. Good luck, Melissa, you'll put residents of Multnomah County in stitches!

For many years I worked a job where I had to go in to homes of all types & work on audio, video & internet issues. I was a guest in someone's home pretty much every day. So I bought a shitty pair of slip on canvas shoes to use as house shoes wherever I worked. I made a show of taking off my shoes & putting those on regardless of the condition of the house or the expectations of the folks that lived there. I wanted them to know that I respected them and their home regardless of whatever condition it was in. And whether they were concerned about it or not.

The creative process and experience is IMMERSIVE, not divisive at our core being.
