Lyall's wren were small, uniquely flightless birds that had quite an unfortunate, albeit iconic extinction in the New Zealand conservation scene. I hope you enjoy!

So sad and now we are losing nearly everything. Without biodiversity, we cannot survive.

It’s good to see another bird of the week, it’s always exciting but also a bit sad to hear about this unique now extinct bird.

Indeed. If only Stephens Island was left alone for just a while longer, all of this could've been prevented. Not only did the Lyall's wren go extinct, but also likely the last sizeable population of South Island Piopio.

Man I always enjoy these videos but I haven't really noticed until now just how low your view count and like amounts are. This is unfortunate as you always provide quality content, keep it up!!

why do cats have to kill everything? Those things are crazy.

If the bird still existed, it would be the most unique bird because the bird's form was like a small bird that can fly. People wouldn't believe it couldn't fly... But yah, it had already extinct... Now they're in the best place up there that no one would hunt them :')

So the Lyle's wren was a little bit like a kiwi, then? A flightless bird that looks kinda like a mouse? Honestly, I think kiwis look a bit more like guinea pigs than mice, but then I've never seen one in person before.

They are quite similar to some rodents in how they fit into their niche.

Kiwis are more similar to rats than mice IMO. New Zealand had no terrestrial mammals before the arrival of humans and the animals we intentionally or accidentally introduced. (There were bats and aquatic mammals.) As a result, many niches filled by mammals elsewhere were filled by birds in NZ. The kiwi even evolved specialized feathers that function like whiskers because it filled a similar ecological niche to rats. (Nocturnal Generalist and Scavenger)

Wow rats I could understand but domesticated cats, colonization is extinction for many species, imagine being a flightless bird, evolution can be narrow sighted

Cats can hunt flying birds very effectively. Source: my cat sometimes brings back birds. Usually they're dead, but a couple of times they weren't as dead as he thought so they fly around my kitchen for a bit before finding their way back out.

Imagen you are a small robin found a small nice island you desided to stay there after years your desendents now lack the ability to fly they are now twice your size one day a hairless ape finds your island and bring there "pet" within a year your desendents are wiped out.
