Hi lydia. There's a thread type called maraflex it's by guttermans. It's a thread with slight stretch which is used with a straight stitch for knit fabric, no need for zigzag stitch.

I'm definitely going to try that - I've been coveting a coverstitch machine just to be able to chainstitch. 🙂 Do you have a suggestion of the right stitch length to use if it's a straight stitch?

That is so cute….this 60 yr old woman might get the pattern to make…need some new clothes because I dropped between 3-4 sizes….I’m wearing stuff I haven’t wore in 20 yrs and being I always by classic clothes in classic colors I have people asking me where I got what I have on which makes me feel great. It’s good sometimes to be a pack rat and keep stuff that doesn’t fit anymore because you never know, it might again….lol…. Plus I like that other jacket you did in that yellow blanket and the cream color skirt, but that I would do in Navy or black or even gray

Is there provision in the pattern to line the sweater as my fabric has a horrible backing also. I’ve never lined a garment, is there a tutorial on this with adding lining? Thanks; this tutorial was amazing!

I don't have a tutorial for lining it. But you can just place the front shell and lining right sides together and so the hem and the cutout area at the top then flip it out. For the back just sew the hems right sides together and flip it back out. So the collar as normal. The lining and shell of the sleeves together and sew the whole garment together as normal.

Wow, definitely going to get this pattern - your finishing details (e.g., twill tape usage to prevent stretching) are always so thoughful! 😊 Love that daisy fabric, too - it's so on trend. Do you think this will work with a poly/rayon/spandex French terry or drapey rib knit.... or would they be too stretchy? (I'm fairly new to knits but both are in the stash🙂)

Thank you! you definitely want a fabric with some body and not super stretchy. The fabric I am using can stretch quite a lot but it doesn't move around when I sew, its a more stable stretch. You are going to have an easier time with something that is less slinky! But then again, fusible interfacing helps alot in that area so it could work with what you have :) Hope that helps!!

@Lydia Naomi Thanks for the tips - I suppose the rib knit, which is poly/rayon/spandex, could be too thin to handle a zip, although I'm tempted to try it 🙂 Do you think a poly/spandex crushed velvet knit could work? It has body, maybe a bit slippery. I have different colored remnants in my stash that could be hobbled together.... I'm a bag maker, new to garment sewing, and a good tip for applying zippers is using double-sided wash away tape! No need to hand baste. 🙂

Hi Lydia, I'm in a bit of a tough spot trying to decide whether it would be worth it to go to school for fashion design -- it would be a little tough financially and for other personal reasons. If I did, I would be going to my state University, not an out-of-state fashion school. I'm wanting to be thoroughly competent in pattern-making and garment construction, to confidently and comfortably be able to make my own clothes and have my own brand one day. My question to you is (assuming you went to school for fashion), do you think a person can learn those things as well as they would at school, with KZbin, books, and other online resources that we have these days? If yes, do you think it would be at a terribly slower pace, or about the same? I think that's my biggest anxiety -- not knowing if all of my trial and errors, and stresses of learning are similar for everyone in this field, or if they would be much less and go smoother and faster, if I were at University, under the guidance of a teacher. Hi, Garment construction you can learn through books and videos - watch those videos by the older people who are in their old sewing shops, they know what they're talking about because they have been in the industry for years. There is so much more online than when I went to school so you have that going for you. When it comes to pattern drafting i'd say get the Helen Joseph Armstrong, Pattern Drafting for Fashion Design book and read it from back to front, if you have trouble then find a tutor or course from someone who has worked in the industry - like in garment production and you'll be set. You could also see if you can intern for a designer or small production company to get the real industry experience. If all of that fails, go to school :) I did go to school and I wouln't go back and change it because it gave me such a solid framework. When it comes to garment construction, it was very broad so I didn't necessarily get a deepdive into certain types of garments, so a lot of that knowledge came from books, youtube and trial and error. The pattern drafting, draping and grading knowledge that I was taught in school was invaluable and was based on industry standards, thats one that you don't really want to DIY too heavily. Do you think that school gave you significant feedback, guidance and direction in building skills, that you wouldn't get learning alone, that would make it a major reason for going? Like did you not have as much of a problem looking for an answer on how to do something, because you could ask a professor, as opposed to something you've learned yourself?
