Great video Lydia! Of course everyone’s choice of clothing is different but I’ve learnt from you that by picking something more basic or neutral means you’re able to dress it up or down, or change the look by adding a belt or different accessories and that way people don’t realize you’re wearing the same dress!

When choosing a summer dress, the most practical consideration is to be able to wear it with my regular underwear! :)

I don't get all the complaints in this video. If you're a long-time subscriber, you should know her style by now - which would, I assume,be very similar to yours hence you subscribed. If you just came across this video and you dont like it, move along it's not for you. Yes I know freedom of speech blah blah blah you are allowed to disagree and voice it out sure. But she's not holding you hostage or making you pay her your hard earned cash and there's also this thing called freedom of choice. Choose to ignore the video and watch other stylists that suit your style more. My point is - stop with all the negativity. She's not hurting anyone. Just because you are free to say what you want doesn't mean you should.

Some constructive criticism: I think the title is misleading. You give your personal opinion and preferences, which is perfectly fine. Just call the video "what I will and will not buy this summer". Saying "what to buy and what not buy" evokes the expectation of general advice for everyone and every type like "look out for these materials, avoid these materials" or "question the practicality of this trend" etc. Or even, "let's look at My Summer favorites, what I personally WILL buy and why. Materials, cuts, colours etc" Just differentiate between personal opinions/ favorites (which is fine) and giving general advice without opinions (like "linen is more breathable than polyester"). Both are fine, but may attract different people and evoke different expectations.

It's all about training the eye. One can like a big floral pattern in the abstract, but not look good with it draped on the body. I agree so much with Lydia's take that fabric should complement the body and not distract.

@@LydiaJaneTomlinsonI personally don’t find the oversized structure to clothing that you tend to gravitate toward flattering. I know it’s very trendy right now but I think it does nothing for most body types. If you are petite or curvy, baggy oversized clothing looks really bad. It’s been branded as “classic” and “old money” but I think it’s more of a trend that will not age well. For example, the first white wrap beach dress you like is a little too baggy imo. The pajama stripe blue dress is downright hideous, as well as the one after it. I understand simplicity and letting your own beauty shine through but oversized pieces like this do the opposite. They cover up your figure in the most unflattering way. I’m ready for more fitted, feminine pieces to come back into style. Almost all your choices were either neutral colors or no prints. What about some tasteful florals? Surely not all clothes with prints are seen as gaudy now? Sorry if this is harsh but I completely agree with the OG comment that style is subjective and many of the pieces you disliked are cute to others.

Hi Lydia. I totally agree with your pieces to avoid buying. I love boho but the style doesn’t have to be full of ruffles, tie dye or bold patterns and bright colours. I love midi and maxi but with muted tones which can be accessorised with an interesting belt, jewellery or bag.Personally, I really dislike any animal prints or synthetic fabrics and far prefer linen and cotton. I think living in a Mediterranean climate as I do,simple, fresh and easy to wear, looser fitting outfits are predominant here.

That baggy red dress would only look good on a tall woman with very little curves and not on petite women with curves. We would get lost in all the bulk. I also have to wear a bra to ensure my boobs dont sag :( I'd love to wear all these dresses but none of them really suit me. Only v neck or scoop necks, with enough fabric to cover any bra straps. Its hard to buy dresses.

Some of your picks look like hospital gowns - I prefer your picks to your what not to buys but yea, some look just too ballooned out and wide. Its great to look elegant and classic but its also nice to show some shape in your outfits and not be swimming in them. not everyone can pull it off either - some dresses you need to be really tall and thin to have it fall and drape properly. There is no way my mom who is 5'3 can more most of those dresses, her waist which is one of her best features would be lost and she would drown in it!

Anything that’s a halter neck with a defined waist is a classic style, meaning it will never go out of style, it can’t be “dated”. Not sure why you’re personally obsessed with hiding your waist line but those of us with hour glass figures have to west things that show our waists, otherwise we look frumpy, and dressing for your body type if never dated. Just because heroine chic chicks can wear billowy mumus doesn’t mean the rest of us normal body types can get sassy with that. Good style isn’t just what’s “in style” it’s what looks good on each body

But a minor comment that came to my mind - you keep repeating that this is „classic”, this is not like, eg. „This dress does not feel classic”. You do not have to be classic all the time. Play with fashion. Classic is framed. Add to your frame some interesting picture 😊 Avoid framing yourself still in one image.

Hmm yes I think perhaps I need to change my phrasing as ‘classic’ to me sort of means multiple things. For example, I think you can have a modern classic piece, or something that is traditional and more of a basic, and that can be called classic too. Perhaps I need to refine that a bit more when I’m explaining!💕

It's been a few years since I've started to wear neutral colors and classic styles because personally i cannot tolerate too florally dresses now. the 2nd dress is a classic design that has never gone out of style & it is beautiful thru all decades ~ halter top styling is very attractive on most shapes ~ i made this dress in a bright floral chiffon with knee length hem 20 years ago & have never stopped wearing it ~ plus i have a gorgeous silk fabric to remake it but with a mid calf to ankle length ~ if you say your style is classic then of course you are not going to like feminine styles or upbeat interesting ones ~ maybe you should have this mentioned in your channel name or in the video title because its not about dos & donts for women in general who might be likely to click on this video like i did ~ i am a clothing & costumer designer so check some of these videos out now & then because of curiosity but am usually disappointed for the reasons just mentioned ~ myself i like 3 types of styling & classic is one of them which includes this dress ~ classic / romantic / fun funky fad ~ those are my style choices & they make for an interesting wardrobe for interesting people ~

It depends on what you think you can pull off, I guess. Both the donts and dos were equally good and bad. In the donts, the bright turquoise can be pulled off only by certain skin complexion. That red dress in the dos can only be pulled off by someone who wants to hide their body (some people feel secure that way and its ok). Likewise the Olive green off shoulder dress was beautiful in the dos. That floral in the dos, o my God was far too bold and is not for everyone. Striped shirt dress in the dos with button all over looked dangerous. Shirt dresses have the risk of the button popping at any time. I never get them.

I love the combination of bold block colours (bright orange and bright blue especially) - they look so good on me! I used to like muted neutral colours until one day I decided to take photos of all the combinations I could get of my wardrobe and then from those photos I realised how bad I looked in all those neutrals. I guess we really have to understand what works best for our unique selfs. I like Lydia's take on the quality of details, shapes and materials though. But you definitely can curate a minimalist style without giving up on colour 🧡💙

I’m afraid that many of your recommendations would look horrible on me. I’m petite and curvy with a small, narrow bone structure which means most of your suggestions would drown me 😂. I love many of the shapes and details in the “don’t buy” category 😂. My most flattering silhouette always has waist emphasis, so a dress like the second “don’t buy” I would buy and wear for years, regardless of trends. Also I love lace have worn it in many different colors. I have seen lots of your videos, and sometimes your tips make sense, and your style makes sense for you. Nevertheless when it comes to dresses, only a few would look right on my figure (although I would choose different colors). But by all means, “you do you and I’ll do me,” as the saying goes. 😉

From BUY section - the white wrap dress looks cheap and busy - has a wrap and puffed sleeves, the pistachio color is so washed off and is probably one of the worse tones for most skin tones including yours. The floral dress looks cheap and wrong proportions with dated belt. Black halterneck one has a belt sash/tie which is too much. Others were really nice.

Those avoids were like the dregs of a website unfiltered 😅. When you're on page 30 and they've reduced multiple times 😂. I fast forwarded those as preaching to the converted here but loved the buys, which were 👌🏿

Loved the Sezane white Broderie Anglaise dress. Broderie Anglaise is so much classier than the cheap polyester lace seen in the swerve dress! A different technique in the making altogether, it’s never really been out of style since the 19th century! Love your videos Lydia ❤

I think both are lovely, but suited for different seasons and occasions. The white eyelet is wonderful for summer, and the red lace sheath is perfect for holiday season/ winter. Also one can dislike a fabric for oneself but understand that it suits someone else.

@@katyp8503 🙄 I don’t think cheap vs. expensive is necessarily the best rubric. I love eyelet and I have tons of it in my summer wardrobe. I also love lace and have it in both winter and summer wardrobes. Both suit my style and harmonize with my figure and complexion. My child likes lace but doesn’t care for eyelet. However they love eyelet on me because they recognize it suits me. Likewise I have preferences in colors, fabrics and styles that suit me but not someone else. Not everyone is tall and slim with wide shoulders, even though that seems to be the preferred type these days. Fashion trends come and go for both clothing and body types. But it’s more important for an individual to find what suits them regardless of trends.

im only at the red lace dress & must comment further~ you keep saying that you think or dont think or personally for you . . .~ if these choices are just about your preferences then once again the title is misleading ~ the red lace dress is a classic sheath styling & looks very classy in this simple red version ~ from what you are wearing i think its very very boring with an unflattering over size fit ~ this whole video is about you so maybe this kind of video is not your forte ~

Some lovely ideas here. Personally, I think beige and black look better in the duller light of a city. In the tropics or other hot weather places with very bright sunlight, brighter colours or white seem to work best. The caftan you dislike would fit in well in many upscale Caribbean islands, for example. They also look best on a woman with a fuller bust sue to the low-V neckline. Timeless in places like Mustique or St Bart's.

Let me just say I'm old enough to have seen many styles come and go. In general I love your eye for clothes and your criteria for selecting. I don't get your aversion to that gorgeous blue floral dress with the diagonal pattern--to me it looks like a fabulous summer garden party--and the colors are classically Chinese-gorgeous. I also don't get the the long sack over the head--the red one and the white one. Maybe because I'm petite. In my opinion this style would overwhelm most people. That being said, I find most of your picks are really great.

Very helpful. I’d like to see more options for different body types as those halter dresses look best on thin people with thin arms. I agree with you on classic/timeless pieces but sometimes it’s fun to have a piece or two that just makes you feel good and shows your personality a bit.

Interesting video Lydia. I prefer dresses with prints but l do got bored of them after wearing them just a couple of times or so (so I’ll end up buying the same dress but in different colors). It’s not practical and just a waste of money. Thank you for making this video.
