This video has many metaphors. He is Sadness, the people who try to stop her are things like (just an example) job, problems, dysfunctional love, and the people around too, but problems not so hard. She stares at sadness like confronting it, she drinks, she laughs at it, she dances and doesn't care if sadness and her problems see her, she tries to be happy. Then the hardest problems try to stop her, try to manipulate her, try to make her do what they want. She fights them, she wants to be happy. But Sadness stands, Sadness won't let them hurt her, she fights Sadness, she wants to avoid Sadness, but she realizes Sadness is inevitable, Sadness will always be there. Sadness is a way to let your waters flow, to let things out. Sadness embraces her, she is safe. Sadness is not bad after all. Sadness is a Blessing.

I loved you vision of it, but I, personally, prefere to think that the other people are just real people around her judging her for all the sadness she has. Just like someone with depression and people are like "c'mon get over it"

A lot of people see the older man as her father. Maybe he is. I see him as her "boyfriend", as her sadness. It is old and heavy and grey, you know it isn't right for you... but it's also familiar, strangely comforting and sometimes you just give in and let it take control... You can read so many things in this video, I think it's quite beautiful x

Yeah, her „boyfriend“. Whose name is depression. Like, they are familiar with each other, he’s her friend, but he’s also someone who holds her back. Toxic and comfortable at the same time.

Today December 23rd 2021 we lost the amazing writer Joan Didion. Through this song we remember her. Lykke Li was inspired by Didion's book "The Year of magical thinking" to write this masterpiece. Lykke has quoted Didion a few times in her interviews. Lykke introduced me to Didion and I thank her. Rest in peace, Joan Didion.

The man represents her grieving soul, which is so painful that she starts suppressing it. Dancing out in life, ignoring the sadness in her, but you can only hide from your soul for so long. Once she’s forced to face her sadness and traumas, she’s healed by integrating this part of herself.

To those of you who have no idea what this is all about. The guy is sadness. She is trying to convince him to stop holding on to her by showing him what he does to her. She is trying to dance away the problems, run, drink a smile about all what makes her usually cry... but in the end, we all end up in the arms of sadness because it defines who we are. It is a part of us.

Sometimes, love hurts so much, that you never feel as alive as when you're truly sad or desperate, after having your heart broke. Sadness is a blessing, because it feeds you with so many feelings, it allows you to feel something inside, something you'd never feel with only happiness in your life.

This is such a beautiful video. And seriously, depending on my mood, it got different layers for me. I used to think it's about depression, but it's only depression when you let the waiters dictate the way you are allowed to feel and behave. However, in this video, she refuses to let herself be guided to her place. Instead, her dancing looks as if she neither wants to deal with either sadness or depression (the suppression of negative feeling, which in the end results in the suppression of ALL feelings as well), until Sadness approaches her and helps her to calm down again. I think that's the lesson after all: LET sadness be close to you. All those other people, so well-behaved and composed... they don't react to her display at all. They are emotionally numb. The trouble is, they don't feel sadness, but neither do they seem to enjoy anything anymore. So, no matter how much it hurts, choose sadness. It's your friend.

Interpretation: Sadness is in everyone. Everyone was sad. The rich are sad. In the beginning you notice everyone silent. Serious. Except for her, she shows she is mature in her feelings of sadness. She is singing to her boyfriend of how to deal with his sadness: SADNESS IS A BLESSING. Her message is basically to own when you're sad. For it is when we are sad that we grow, and we become better. To be free-spirited when we are sad, and to choose to see sadness, as a blessing.

I think she's confronting people who says that are happy but are just Hippocrates, they say they're happy but her sadness is a blessing compared to their happiness. nowadays people always keep trying to avoid problems, act like nothing is happening, taking anti depressive for normal situations, it's like we had to act like real robots who ain't got any feelings.

One final interpretation of this video: On a high, perhaps superficial level actor Stellan Skarskard might represent Lykke Li's father and the complex love/hate she has for him. But on a deeper level he indeed represents her depression, as others like Luis mentioned. What is most important though is to realize the meaning of the end of the video. _All_ the others in that restaurant (which, I believe, is in Stockholm's Grand Hotel, where I stayed for a week years ago) represent *saboteurs* and "see no evils" (the ones who silently condone the saboteurs). The third party actors, including from our own family, who say "You cannot become a singer / actor / writer/poet (like me) etc", "Get a real job so you do not starve etc" or (the eaters) who never encourage us or protest what the saboteurs say. Those had power over Lykke until the end, because she had still not fully embraced her depression. Once she did (the moment Skarsgard stood up from his chair and everyone was left in awe) they no longer had any power over her. Skarsgaard does not play a... mafia boss (I refer to the fake scar on his cheek) with a much younger mistress at the end saving a ... damsel in distress or Lykke's father but *Lykke herself becoming their own woman,* believing in herself, not giving a rat's behinds for what saboteurs say and 'see no evils' _do not_ say and ... finally succeeding. 💖
@eveycocoa6295
@eveycocoa6295 8 жыл бұрын
My interpretation: She was sick of being sad, so she tries to rebel against it by making a joke out of herself and not caring about what others think of her..because that strong will would be a contradiction of what she's really feeling but eventually she realized she does actually care how people perceive her and judgement along with her personal issues finally get to her, and she accepts her feelings..that she's broken by life and all she has left is her sorry feelings. The end. :)
@tonyrightmyer3486
@tonyrightmyer3486 8 жыл бұрын
+Meliena Vamps I sort of followed the same interpretation, but I saw the man as the "sadness" which she went to comfort, since oftentimes sadness is something that people dwell on repeatedly because its something that can be "missed" almost when its not there.

I kind of got the same impression, with the added element of ignorance by the people around her. She's sad, maybe even depressed, but everyone around her is trying their best to ignore her mental health, so she 'acts out', but "sadness" is always there for her.

being a hot young girl dating an older man?
@Martin-zr2tb
@Martin-zr2tb 4 жыл бұрын
Stonem001 I don't think she means the exact circumstances of this video The example of a young girl dating a seemingly richer old man is just a metaphor for selling out in a way, and throughout her life she's learned to be a lover of more than just hot people her own age? Can you say the same? Who is to say that can't come from a place of sorrow from some? Just because a young girl gets with an old man doesn't mean she's just some dumb blonde bombshell looking for a constant vacation, Anyways she may mean it's more about being in a predicament with love where you feel trapped or somewhere that's not ideal for you, she laughs after drinking in the video because she knows she's taking it out on herself like self-sabotage for feeling other hurt her, she also laughs she is also trying to hurt him in a way by drinking so it means instead of throwing fits or yelling at him, she is wise enough to kind of take it out on herself instead, either way it's an unhealthy relationship, but she has clearly learned to cope about things better emotionally than the people around her, if they all just pointed and gawked and laughed about the crazy girl in the room, it wouldn't portray that everyone in the room knows that she's in pain, average people would gossip and smirk and roll their eyes at the crazy girl, that's also maybe why it's at a super fancy restaurant, it leads us to believe that everyone in the room is cultured and recognizes her pain or something His face looks disappointed constantly, not just with we but obviously more with himself through her She means depression feels this way... because it makes you feel alone in a battle, usually against a lover or romantic situation, abuse, trauma , etc, you learn to be strong and laugh at it in a sense, it can make you feel stuck, it can also hurt the ones around you, they can also be a part of the problem... And we live in a society that suppresses a lot of people who are better at managing, as crazy the way they manage seems at times

I think that he's older not as a father figure but because this is a sadness that she's had for a long time and she tries to drink the pain away but people tell her she needs to stop drinking and since that's the only way she knows how to stop her sadness, she relapses. The people around her have their own sadnesses that they try to deal with in their own way, but they're silent about it.

My wounded rhymes make silent cries tonight My wounded rhymes make silent cries tonight And I'll keep it like a burning Longing from a distance I ranted, I pleaded, I beg him not to go For sorrow, the only lover I've ever known Sadness is a blessing Sadness is a pearl Sadness is my boyfriend Oh sadness, I'm your girl These scars of mine make wounded rhymes tonight I dream of times when you were mine so I Can keep it like a haunting Heart beating close to mine Sadness is a blessing Sadness is a pearl Sadness is my boyfriend Oh sadness, I'm your girl I ranted, I pleaded, I beg him not to go For sorrow, the only lover I've ever known Every night I rant, I plead, I beg him not to go Will sorrow be the only lover I can call my own? Sadness is a blessing Sadness is a pearl Sadness is my boyfriend Oh sadness, I'm your girl Sadness is a blessing Sadness is a pearl Sadness is my boyfriend Oh sadness, I'm your girl Sadness is my boyfriend Oh sadness, I'm your girl Oh sadness, I'm your girl Oh sadness, I'm your girl

This is probably the best video I've ever seen. My teacher played it to our class and everyone fell completely silent - the acting is brilliant, you sense there's a very powerful underlying message.
