Adi Schwartz and Einat Wilf, authors of ‘The War of Return’ talk with Lyn Julius about their book. Once Hamas is defeated, how good will prospects be for Israel to make peace with the Palestinians? These two prominent Israeli liberals argue that for the conflict to end, Palestinians must come to terms with the fact that there will be no right of return.

Japan. So glad to see that you are promoting this approach. I think that there might be a rag tag coalition of supporters from places like Argentina under Milei. Japan and Germany could certainly be teased into some action. Italy. Hungary, Poland. These are countries that are impacted by the inflow of muslim refugees already and would be keen to take a gamble. Thanks

Wonderful conversation. I have a question about the "argument" saying that Zionism is colonialism. It is obviously nonsense in connection with refugees, not least refugees from the Middle East and North Africa. But could this "argument" refer to the financial support from Ashkenazi Jews in the West?

Colonialism benefits the colonialists' mother country through exploitation. It is hard to see how money coming in from Ashkenazi Jews can be anything than a drain on them. The benefit would go to the organisations and causes they are funding in Israel.

Zionism emerged as part of the changing world order changing from Empires to nation states. Everything was shifting, the Ottoman EMpire was collapsing, new countries and borders were emerging. The picture that there was a "Palestinian" state which the Zionists over ran to form Israel is nonsense. There was no Palestine, and no Arab movement to create an independent state. 98% of the Middle East was and is Arab. Their singular interest in the remaining 2% was to not allow Jews to have their own state.

Trev? Do you really want to be on the side of Jew haters? Then why sound as if you need a reason? The Palestinians were offered a state, 99% of the land they wanted, their capital in jerusalem, financial support full recognition in 2000, and 2008. They refused. But ok you do you.

And what kind of state would it ever have been? A failed despotic, regressive, misogynistic, homophobic, corrupt Islamic state with no human or animal rights, as exemplified in Gaza under Hamas.
