Been on a Clark Terry rabbit hole and this is my first ever listen to Toshiko Akioshi’s band. Fabulous!! Her band goes straight to the top of my list for modern era big band! Her control and understanding and HUMILITY as a conductor is so perfect! She respects the soloists and you can tell she is the best kind of director. Love! What a fantastic video recording. I wish I was an adult when they were still around; still very thankful that this performance was preserved. Thanks for uploading!

Clark Terry was truly one of a kind. Saw him many times over the years. Thankful that I had hang out time with him too. Several autographed albums remain on the wall of my music practice room, providing inspiration all these years later. And Toshiko Akioshi and Lew Tabackin. WOW!!! Saw their FANTASTIC band at The Jazz Showcase. They about blew the roof off the club!!! Thank you for sharing this great video!!

I got to play with the great Pete Minger for his senior recital at U of Miami. He was 40 and I was 22. Pete and Clark were definitely equals . What an honor. Rest with God Pete and Clark.

Cool. Loved akioshi/tbackin big band. I went to jazz Band Camp at U. Redlands in early 1980's. Totally unique and different approach.

Clark Terry! Had the incredible honor of playing with him at the 1986 Monterey Jazz Festival when he sat in on a couple tunes with the High School All Star band. Super generous and humble guy, funny too. And of course, a monster musician.

Ever since i heard that album 'Live in Newport '77' i was knocked by this great Big Band. The arrangements were so fresh and played to the highest standards by some great sidemen. I loved how tight the band sounded and the amazing solos. The band went on to tour and produce some great album recordings of which i have most. This clip is typical of the band standard at that time. Thank you Toshiko Akiyoshi and of course Lew Tabakin

This particular chart was the very first piece by this ensemble I ever heard - on a late-night Jazz show (on a rock FM station) in 1979. I went out the next day and bought every album I could find. I spent a day blown away by incredible musicanship and ruthless technique. Those five-part sax voicings. . . man.

She made a small circle with her both hands 🫶to express her thankfulness to the first trumpeter after his play. 👌That’s very cute of her, and a typical gesture seen in Japanese girls(?).💮

Should’ve seen her as a soloist in the 50’s , barely out of her teens , making soloists old enough to be her parents look like students.

@@Kathyc1961 Correct it is Larry Ford. Fantastic guy. Can't say enough about how he was not just a great player but a great human being. Studied with him for a number of years at the time he played for this band. Even made it to Toshiko's home briefly one time with Larry.
