The soprano, Lynne Cantlon, was born in Auckland, New Zealand, and commenced her musical career at age eight. After performing with the New Zealand Opera Company, she appeared on Australian radio and television - and won the prestigious Sun Aria in 1967. From 1968 she sang with the Canadian Opera Company and won the 1970 District Finals of the Metropolitan Opera Auditions. She was later contracted to Hamburg State Opera, where she gave over three hundred performances in twenty-three roles and, in 1979, debuted with Opera Australia in the title role of PATIENCE. With the national company she appeared in THE MAGIC FLUTE, THE BEGGAR'S OPERA, LA BUONA FIGLIUOLA and MADAMA BUTTERFLY. We hear her as Leonora in Giuseppe Verdi's IL TROVATORE with the Inez of Judy Bellingham in a concert performance of the opera given in the Christchurch Town Hall on July 7th, 1979. The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra is under the baton of Yugoslavian conductor Vanco Cavdarski.
