Ed King tells the story of him in the rehearsal house, where Ronnie would always demand they bring something to work on, and Ed was playing around with this riff, and Ronnie, sitting by kept motioning him to keep playing, then after a bit, Ronnie came up to Ed, and whispered in his ear "Two feets they come a creepin, like a black cat do". They knew it was a hit in the making.

That’s the “Hell House” in Green Cove Springs, Fl, right down the road from me. The heat and humidity they suffered through in that place inspired the name.

GREAT REACTION GUYS. It is gangster. Blackfoot (an offshoot of Skynyrd) has some gangster songs (e.g. Fox chase and Highway song as well as gimme gimme gimme) One of Skynnyrds best songs imho is The Needle and the Spoon. SHORT BUT SWEET. God bless. Also forget about 38 special, I saw that recommended below. PETSONALLY, I THINK green Grass and High Tides may be the best southern rock song of all time, being a Floridian.😅

They made five great records before the untimely death of Ronnie Van Zant the singer, Steve Gaines the guitar player, Steve's sister and a few crew in that plane crash. They did music with his brother Johnny years later starting in 1991 under the same name, and its not bad. But the golden age is 70s Skynyrd for sure!

Inducted in 2006. Ronnie Van Zant wrote their lyrics and he lived like a gangster in a rough neighborhood in Florida. He was nice when sober and deadly when drunk. He did have strong feelings about guns and about driving under the influence that he put in his songs.

There will never be another band like Lynyrd Skynyrd. Thanks again, fellas, for keeping their music alive and for another great reaction as usual.

A "Saturday Night Special" usually described cheap hand guns, sold on the black market in the 1970s. Some of these things were crude and flimsy, but guess what- They were cheap, widely available, and worked....

Thanks for doing this song. I love when reactions are done before artists reach so-called commercial success. This album has so many great songs that are passed over. Everyone always reacts to the radio hits, it's a shame that songs like this are missed. The Ballad of Billy Kid is a similar style to this, with amazing lyrics.

A “Saturday night special” is typically a cheap handgun (.38 if a revolver or .380 if semi-auto) with a very short barrel so it’s easily concealed, usually bought off the streets. Fun fact: For this song, drummer Bob Burns had to take a break from touring and Artimus Pyle was brought in to replace him. Pyle was given just a couple of days to rehearse the song in a rented Atlanta club before they hit the road again. Producer Al Kooper was rehearsing them, and became confused when the band began playing on the second beat of the second bar. When asked why, guitarist Ed King explained that it all worked out perfectly when they get to the guitar solo. So Kooper grew even more concerned, thinking that one of the subsequent bars had to be a beat short. The band eventually convinced Kooper that there was no need to conserve beats! This was a case of by-the-book Kooper vs. raw-talent Lynyrd Skynyrd - from which Kooper backed down.

I’ve heard this song my entire life living in the South. So happy new listeners are discovering Skynyrd. Funny memory about this particular song. Years ago I was across the street from the legendary Florabama Lounge in Orange Beach, Alabama at a dock local boats pull up to from trips out on the gulf. I’m sitting there waiting on a parking spot, when all of a sudden I hear Saturday Night Special blaring from a boat coming in. It was this expensive ski boat pulling up with four or five college guys and one college girl in a itty bitty white bikini to the dock. Those jerks stayed in the damn boat while that girl got out and came back with a case of beer under each arm to them 😡 now every daggum time I hear this song I think of those jerks

Specifically a "Saturday night Special" (el-cheapo), was pretty much a one use disposable 5 shot revolver..just as dangerous for the shooter as the victim..lots of homicides during their reign.. so i agree, but in the next line he shouldve said SNS ain't good for nothin.....But unfortunately he said "handguns are made for killing, ain't no good for nothin else".. and they should all be at the bottom of the sea !? that's where I don't agree..Millions of lives saved in self defense..besides it being a God given right to keep and possess, to defend yourself, your family and your home against bad guys and a tyrannical gov't... I believe over the years LS has amended the phrase...lol.. I was in my teens when Lynyrd Skynyrd hit it big, and I was an instant fan !( and remained a lifelong fan).. and the music to SNS is insanely good !

Can you imagine how much equipment the roadies had to manage with a seven man band?🤪 You gotta have a big stage too when you have a singer, 3 guitarists and a bass player!💯😁❤️✌️

WAR is a great 70's band I think you guys will really like. They're in a place somewhere between Santana and Sly and the Family Stone.

A snubnose .38 revolver is what is considered a .38 Special, aka Saturday Night Special. Weapon of choice by criminals back in the day due to it's small compact size for easy concealment and the cheap price you could get them for.

I still saw them live about 15 years ago. Great band with tragic losses. They had a lot of quite critical songs like this one. I think you would also enjoy Whiskey Man by Molly Hatchet. I always say when it comes to Southern Rock there is the holy trinity chronologically with Allmans, Skynyrd, and Hatchet. CCR played Southern Rock but were actually not from this area.

If you want a lot of the hits from them on vinyl, get Gold and Platinum.

Lynyrd Skynyrd definitely belong in the Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame. They are almost predestined for it and have deserved it for a long time ! I got all them vinyls and it sounds very good. Thanks for sharing us so many songs from one of the best bands ever ! Best wishes @all from Hamburg (Germany)

Fellas, please check out I Ain't the One by them. Another really cool groove. Also, if you haven't watched the documentary, you got to check it out. Basically they had a little shack down by the river where they all grew up where they'd go and drink and smoke and that's where they wrote and worked out all their best music. Great story about a great band. Such a tragedy what happened. Who knows the heights they could have reached.
