Lynyrd Skynyrd is the very first band I saw in concert. In New Orleans. June 6, 1974. I was 16 yrs. old. I saw them many times over the years.

Ronnie could see right through these label hustlers back in the day. Especially ones from New York, trying to blow smoke up his ass in the back of some sweaty roadhouse in the middle of nowhere, promising a pot of gold if he'd sell his soul. Van Zant was an Indie type before they even invented them.

I like his term for those hustlers "Yankee slicker"

The eventual result of this song was “Gimme back My Bullets”. The skepticism of the label was fully founded.

Got some airplay on the progressive rock stations. Surprisingly, along the same vein, Elvis Costello got pretty good airplay for his "Radio, Radio" which seriously took a slap at the whole industry.

They actually played this to audition for the MCA executives

My understanding is Ronnie wrote this song shortly after signing with MCA and the first time they played it out was at a sort of coming out party for the band at MCA. In short, Ronnie had a set of big brass ones.
