Your skills are better than you give yourself credit for. You can get the art and lines pretty darn close to perfect when you do the touch-ups. The only reason any repair is visible is the slight difference with the paint colours, which is pretty unavoidable given the age of the original paint. The black outlines are what really makes it, and they are what takes an ultra steady hand and exacting movement. You have done an awesome job here.

Man I've had a few that literally just inking in the black lines made them look pretty presentable. If you want to see the craziest one I did check out the Lost World we repainted, it was pretty rough! Thank you for the compliments, you should see some of the stuff people can do with airbrushes though :) I temper my comments about repairing them because I've seen some of the pinball guys do amazing things!

Scholars pronounce Ankh differently, but props for knowing what they are. I read and study a lot of Continental and dynastic African history. Egypt being the civilization that is focused on by most scholars. To this day people, academics and scholars debate whether Cleopatra was African, European Greek and or Turkish. Also her true role and behaviour as Queen. I find the artwork and backglass intriguing on many levels. You again have done an amazing job!

Yeah I'm a big Egypt fan since I was a kid, I haven't gotten into the Cleopatra era that much but all the Amarna period stuff is fascinating to me, also Amenhotep III, all that era since we have so much info about it and the tombs, even the bodies. All the stuff like Queen Tiye left a little lock of her hair in Tutankhamen's tomb as a present.... then they identified her mummy and she has this huge head of hair like all the paintings showed. The whole thing is fascinating, they should teach a whole year of it in school to people... I did a report on Cote d'Ivoire in College once too but at the time I kind of just phoned it in I didn't really look into it as much as I should have....

Had this one in my DADS store back in 1977 we had the EM version, SS VERSION, WE ALSO had a black Cleopatra version of this game, not at the same obviously, it was a poplar game back then. Lot of fun to play.

Your videos have inspired me to take on the playfield touch-ups of a Gottlieb Robo-War that I just acquired. The lower area near the apron, many small areas outside the mylar and around the pop bumpers is completely bare wood. It's fairly geometric artwork though and I have a high quality PNG of what the artwork should look like so I'm going to give it a go.

You can do it man, just take your time and do one color at a time. I'd ink in the black lines first, then it's basically a big coloring book. When you're done, re-ink the black again.

I started using water-based acrylic paints on playfields, but I could never match up the sheen properly. Most water-based acrylic paints are "flat" and need some type of clear to match up to the old paint sheen. I've had better luck using Testor gloss enamel model paint. This way the paint sheen looks closer to the original paint, and you don't have the clear coat the whole playfield after the touch up...
@LyonsArcade7 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is a problem. We typically clear coat it with satin which seems to match the sheen of the rest of the playfield and just spot clear it in the area we've touched up, then wax wax wax until you can't see the difference. I eventually want to start using model paint or even an air brush with model paint...

@@LyonsArcade I love your videos and have watched a ton of them. Do you have one showing what clear you use and your technique for using it? You always mention that you clear but it doesn't seem to be demonstrated. It may be boring for some, but I am about to try this and would appreciate any tips for achieving the best results.

@eed I assume he keeps it secret because pinball people will hammer him with negative comments about how it will never last. I have several "garage" games that will never be award winning restorations. I would just like to know the secret to putting lipstick on a pig.

Very nice art restoration! How do you do the thin black lines? You mention ink, but could you expand on that?
@LyonsArcade5 жыл бұрын
There's an acrylic paint pen called "Montana" that you can buy, it's basically a black ink pen but instead of ink it's acrylic paint like we do on the rest of the playfield. Then we just freehand it... if you look close the lines aren't perfect!

I have a system 1 countdown, I have just replaced the power supply and both main boards, it has four sets of targets two sets pop up and two sets try but not enough power getting to them to push them up in to position, can you help, Cheers Garry
@LyonsArcade5 жыл бұрын
Sure Garry, look under the playfield where those two are and track the wires back from the solenoid that makes them pop up... see if they run to a small bottlecap transistor mounted underneath the playfield. That transistor could be bad, there may be a fuse down there too keeping the transistor from working.

What spray can clear coat do you use? Do you spray the whole playfield? How many coats do you spray abs do you do any sanding? Lastly, do you use a matte finish?
