Emerald is indeed a lot tougher than previous entries, and quite a few trainers have actual strategies and powerful movesets! I mostly skipped past the fights in this video, but there were a lot difficult and interesting encounters during the story. It made the combat a lot more fun to play than in Gen 1 & 2 in my opinion :'D

I didn't get pretty far in a first playthrough but then I tried it again and fell in love with it. It's great feeling when a game changes your opinion of it on its own merits!

Funnily enough, I was indeed a bit down on RSE, but not because of the events/tie-ins. I had attempted to play the games multiple times in the past and always gave up around Slateport because I believe the early game is really tedious! Once you get past it though, Gen 3 is an absolute blast and a treat to play! I had the experience you described with several games in the past, and it is indeed a wonderful feeling to have something you were negative about become such a positive experience! Sometimes the timing is just wrong, it's fine to try again later :'D

Gyarados is based on a Japanese wind sock, hence the Flying type. It's also based on the myth that koi will jump over waterfalls and turn into dragons, so there's why it uses so many Dragon-type moves.

I get the feeling the Dragon-type was created at the last second for the Dratini line. There are other Generation I Pokémon like Charizard and Aerodactyl that look like dragons but are not Dragon-type. And it's disappointing that Mega Gyarados becomes a Dark-type instead of a Dragon-type.

Big fan of your work as always! Here are a couple of tips depending on how you want to complete this challenge. 1) If you plan to get the Celebi from the JPN Bonus Disk, the Gamecube is region locked so you will also need a completed GBA save file in order to redeem the Celebi. FR/LG will require the Sevii Island quest to be completed, so for the sake of your sanity, you should play either one of Ruby or Sapphire in Japanese. 2 birds in one stone. The JPN Bonus Disc does recognize Emerald as well as FR/LG so that's also an option if you want that as well as long as they are in japanese. 2) Jirachi is available from the US Bonus Disc or from the PAL version of Pokemon Channel (which is a game that requires you to watch plenty of Pokemon media for its completion). I would advise to use the Bonus Disc instead because its only requirement is to start a save file and obtain the Pokedex to get a Jirachi. It's only compatible with English versions of R/S sadly (Same with Channel but PAL Channel can send the Jirachi to any R/S game of any region that matches the language setting). 3) For Mew there are a couple of Distribution ROMs available online which had a few Mew events available you can use to redeem it. The Japanse version of Emerald was the only one who received the distribution of the Old Sea Map but pretty sure there are other distributions that can get you a Mew (Like the movie MYSTRY one). 4) Once you begin Pokemon Colosseum take into account that it has a very annoying mechanic where Shadow Pokemon use a move called Shadow Rush which is a base 90 power attack that causes recoil. It's one of my main grievances with the game itself so plan accordingly because if your Shadow Pokemon is too weak, it will kill itself on recoil. Also there are a couple of Sleep immune Pokemon (Notcowl and Ariados) but I am probably getting ahead by far too much :P Hope this helps and best of luck!

Honestly, I don't blame you for not knowing Gyarados is part flying type, because it makes no goddamn sense. To this day, the only physical flying-type move it learns is Bounce. (Except in gen 9 apparently, since Game Freak didn't feel like putting it in the game. 🤦)

They also offer an interesting parallel with both the player character and Wally (who is the dark horse surprize and is my fave Human Character in the franchise for the subtext RSE offers)

I tried doing this for Moemon Emerald and made it about 75% of the way before restarting. Helps that I have other romhacks with otherwise difficult-to-obtain or noncatchable Pokémon I could trade over. Fun experience, especially when each Moemon has its own custom sprite (obviously) and Pokédex entry to read through. Btw, can't wait to hear your thoughts on the Sinnoh soundtrack. One of my friends from when I was really little gave me his copy of Emerald as a going away present. It had a completely finished pokedex except for maybe one? I think it was Deoxys he needed. I thought that was so awesome. Later, I left the cartridge at my next door neighbors house on accident for less than an hour before realizing, started to run over to his place where my neighbor friend met me walking down his driveway. He was already bringing me the game! How nice! He. Deleted the save file. He told me right there on the spot. He said to me straight up. It was because it was a girl character. I don’t know what he was thinking, but my heart was exploded. I’ve been through a lot of shit, but somehow this event feels almost worse than anything to this day. He was like 8, and we were both brats, so like I get it. You do stupid shit for no reason as a little kid. But damn. I never saw the friend who gave it to me again. He was gone, moved to texas. And that pokedex never came close to it’s former glory. lol Just thought I’d put this here because I needed to get this story out there into the aether, spread my pain around lol and I like these vids and it’s about emerald so

I made a living dex years back in gen 6. It took me hundreds of hours and I can't remember how many times I played through different games to finish. I can't imagine doing it without access to the other generations and the GTS. It was a huge accomplishment but I never want to do it again.
