My Father used the M1 carbine in Okinawa Japan,He took out a Japanese machine gunner with his M1 but He was took out by a Japanese Sniper,But survived lost a lung.He had a rough time after returning Home, suffered nightmares,He watched a buddy get shot in the head by a Japanese child after reaching out to give the Boy a candy bar,My Father had to kill the child,My Mom said He used to wake up in the middle of the night screaming and sweating for years after the War, then He took up drinking.sometimes I wonder what suffering He had gone thru due to the War.He earned the Silver Star and the Purple Heart,He died when He was 47 years old,I am 53 now I was 9 yrs old when He died.He was surely part of the Greatest Generation,May He always Rest in Peace ,Love You Dad.

+John Mechling My Father in Law was in Army in the Phillipines as a support troop and saw some action. He had the same problems with bad dreams. My Grandfather on Mom's side was a Marine in the Pacific (Aircraft Mechanic on SBDs) on several Islands Including the Phillipines and didn't have any problems to speak of with nightmares.

+John Mechling My Father and my Uncle both fought in the Pacific Theatre - my Uncle on Okinawa. He said that the guys with the carbines took out a huge percentage of the enemy, especially at night with the night scopes. He was a marine - just passed away this year - and his favorite, like most marines, was the Springfield. I still have my Dad's carbine, as well as my Uncle's .45. Their stories are etched in my memory. True heroes all.

My grandfather was an engineer attached to an airborne unit during ww2. He carried the m1 carbine through France, Operation Market Garden, and during the Battle of the Bulge. He passed away last year, but he always had the m-1 in his gun cabinet. Thanks for the video on a real piece of American history.

Great video. My dad bought me my own brand new .30 carbine when I was 8 years old in 1961. The first few times he took my brother and me hunting he would give us kids a "special deer bullet" a crimped nose grenade launcher blank. The next year we got real lead tipped hollow point aftermarket loads. I still have a handful of those crimped blanks... And pop made us strip, clean and reassemble them every single time we came home from the target range. I can still smell Hoppes #9 bore solvent.

+kimmer6 Back then you could get them mail order for $15. I got one from my dad too for deer hunting. My brother got one in Okinawa when he was stationed there and had it modified with a new stock and nickeled barrel. The bolt and receiver have swirled patterns machined into them. Made the MI into a beautiful gun.

+hopper1419 I wish I still had mine. We lost a lot of stuff in that fire. Pop bought an 8mm Mauser for $10. For $15 you could get one with matching serial numbers. His Mosin Nagant cost $8. Circa 1962. It fired when he closed the bolt once so he sold it for $12. 30:06 corrosive 1943 AP ammo in new Garand N-blocks was a penny a shot. We blew thru tons of that when I was a kid.

I remember seeing racks of m1s for sale at $18.00 at Sears in Hamilton Ontario Canada about 1966 or so. They became a restricted weapon sometime later because of the short barrel made them popular for bank robberies.

I like how people say the .30 carbine is anemic, when it has nearly the same ballistics of a .357 magnum, but because of the barrel length they have higher velocity. last time I checked the .357 is a very powerful handgun, as long as your within 200 yards youll be fine

OK just had to watch this video again as Ruger just released a 10/22 Talo M1carbine. That should tell you how integrated this rifle is in the shooting sports culture. Medal, wood, light recoil, balance, fun factor. Few other rifles can match this formula. Take one to the range and put 100 or 200 rounds down range. What a smile. Hard to do that with a M1 Garand.Sootch00- great video. JSOG6

Thanks for the vid. I am interested to know more about the .30 round and what it can do. Personally, I like little "get around" rifles like this. For hunting I use a 30-30 which is great to grab and go. It is short and powerful. For hunting in the woods of NC, it is great. The M1 seems to be the same size and possess the same handiness. I like it. When I was a kid I had a M1 wooden BB gun. Boy I wish that hadn't gotten lost in the move!!!!

At the Big 5 where I work, we once got an M1 Carbine from 1944. I was amazed at how quickly we sold it. Literally within 30 minutes of us having opened out doors a middle aged school teacher came in to look around, saw it, asked if she could hold it. After a few seconds of though she reached in her pocket, pulled out her credit card, and asked for the paperwork. Turned out her father had fought in the Korean War and was issued an M1 Carbine. Sadly, he was one of the many that never came home.

I had one of those. I wish I hadn't traded it. One history I learned was that the .45 pistol was difficult to master, so members of crew-served weapons (such as a mortar) would carry the lighter M1 carbine. It's easy to shoot to about 200 meters; many can shoot accurately to longer ranges. It was fun to shoot. I think I paid $129.00 for it in 1974. A few fellows would put folding "paratroop" stocks on them but I prefer the solid wood.

The M1/M2 has always been an underrated rifle, primarily due to the round. But you have to remember that the rifle was never intended to be a battle rifle. It was intende to give REMF personnel something more powerful than their 1911's but more compact than a Garand. For front line troops in the ETO, often platoon officers and platoon sergeants carried them because in the thick of things they should not be shooting anyway but they would nonetheless provide more than adequate close in firepower

I did some looking around the net for info on my Carbine. I found out it's an Erma's Mfg (E.F.M.) weapon, serial number 3175. I've got one mfg by Inland Division (GM) in 1943. A real sweet shooting little rifle. Ammo can be hard to find at local gun shops and is pricey. You can, however, find reasonable pricing on the Internet. There are several reputable websites that stock it. For the chap who asked: it is pronounced car-bean. As sootch said, Rock-ola was a juke-box company licensed to build the M1. The built comparatively few rifles and as such their value is much higher than other examples.

Would you believe this was the first rifle I ever fired? As a new shooter I fell in love with it's characteristics. Light, easy to tame, and more than enough accuracy a beginner on a 200 yard range could ask for. If costs weren't a factor I'd say the M1 Carbine was a viable progression from the venerable 10/22 as a range or training gun, and with enough bite to work in a defensive role.

I've had a chance to fire one of these (WW2 surplus) and love it! For me, if I am looking at a target before I shoulder the rifle, it is on target immediately. Maybe not a 10, but it's in the 8 ring on a B27 at 100 yds. *immediately*. Yeah, if that target was shooting at me, I'd take that shot ... and the target would lay down to bleed for a while. At 50 yards + rapid fire, I can get either 4 out of 5 on a 9" paper plate in right at 2 seconds. It just fits me. Put a 9" paper plate on your chest and imagine being on the receiving end of that. Awesome sauce! A grand? I'd pay it if I could just get the old guy to part with it before he dies. After that, his son is going to scoop it up and I'll never see it again.

The M1/2 Carbine was the first PDW intended to replace the M1911 .45 cal pistol. The reason was it takes less training to use a rifle effectively a rifle than a pistol. This also extends the range from 50 yards to 100 or 150 yards as compared to the 50 yards of the pistol. The French found in the First Indochina War that the "little" .30 cal Carbine was deadly at 50 to 75 yards. Just where this weapon was intended to operate. This rifle will take deer with the JHP.

The power issue of the .30 Carbine was due to ball ammo. Actual ballistics show it as having similar power to the .357 Magnum. If one were to use expanding ammo then they could tell a big difference. I have actually taken a whitetail deer with the .30 Carbine and Cor-Bon DPX loads

As far as flat bolt, round bolt is concerned the reason for the round bolt was not for M-2 full auto. MANY later M-1's were made with round bolts. They went to round bolt because it was faster, cheaper and easier to produce without having to mill out the flat section.

Mail order carbine ammo, by Tula, Privi, is something short of $30- a box of fifty. At a recent gun show I got the Russian (?) made ammo for $22- a box of fifty for steel cased ammo that worked just fine!

livingwebster I'm no ammo snob, as I shoot a good deal of steel cased, but I doubt I would run it through a WWII weapon.

Look at ammo seek it's only 20 cents a round 10 dollars a box of 50 not expensive at all if you want brass cased you can get it for 29 to 30 cents a round and underwood and buffalo bore make good defensive and hunting ammo 30 carbine is cheaper then ar ammo and one of the cheaper rounds out there

Sootch good video some of your facts are a bit new to me I thought I knew all there was about the M1. But damn good explanation for someone who doesn't know that much about guns. Your a great face to have for the shooting sports in general.

I really like this rifle, in the 70's & 80's you could find these in shops for $75-$100 dollars. A lot of government agencies used these (prisons/sheriffs) because they were effective and inexpensive. Now a decent one will cost $800-1000. Fantastic for a ranch rifle.

Audie Murphy always carried his 'lucky carbine'. I have shot hogs and cattle and a deer with my carbine(the deer was at eighty yards) and never needed more than one shot. I have asked many of the 'no hitting power' crowd if they would allows me to shoot at them to prove their claim. None have ever took me up on this offer.

The Big-5 near my house sells the old military M-1 carbines for $800.00 in CA. Very pricey but also highly desired. I would like to buy a used one just to have a little piece of history. I don't like the look of the new functioning replicas, well they're real M-1 carbines new or not. I just like the look of the used military ones better. I used to shoot one when I was like 13 but that rifle is now long gone. Recoil is very minimal and close range accuracy is great. My gun fever just went up^
