Project I took on in October 2020 to add sound to the classic footage of the M-497's test run near Bryan, OH in 1966. Contains mostly original recordings of mine (mostly rolling stock and sounds for the NYC Geep) but some audio is borrowed.

The thing I find absolutely wild is the fact that this thing safely performed the way it did at such speeds along all jointed rail.

With high iron as it's called it'll be fine. Also, the lens forshortening effect makes the track lengths appear shorter than they actually are.

Know this area well. I've heard comments from former NYC/PC Engineers that this was a favored area to try and make up a little time when running late as they knew the track was good for higher speeds.

Cool! But a truly terrible idea.. any jet is bad for this, but they even used a turbojet, rather than a turbofan. The straight jet is especially inefficient at low altitude and low airspeed, and this was both. I see it reached 183 mph.. fast for a train, but slow for the jet. The specific fuel consumption for that was about 1 lb per hour per pound of thrust..each engine is about 6000 lb thrust, so about 6000 lb kerosene per hour per engine. X 2 = 12000 lb fuel per hour. So, in an hour, you'd travel 183 miles and burn over 1700 gallons of fuel. That is about 0.1 miles per gallon. The efficiency would be far worse at lower speeds, as turbines only become somewhat efficient (relatively speaking) at near maximum power, they are extra bad when run at low power. Truly a terrible idea. I would have loved to have been involved, though, looks like fun!
