The whole film is like an incredibly slow horror movie. You keep willing Pu Yi to make wiser choices...but he doesn't have any training from anyone who actually cared only for him to help him do so. And so, his impulses and foolish choices continue to lead him and his nation into destruction. It was an incredibly sad film, but well told.

Very true. Sadly other historians think the emperor was much crueler than depicted, and not quite the innocent youth he's portrayed as in this movie. But then, that's judging a man raised in medieval standards by 21st century retrospective

I've read both of the books that the movie was based upon - Pu Yi's memoir, "From Emperor to Citizen," and Reginald Johnston's "Twilight in the Forbidden City." The Imperial court was already in decline and essentially under the control of the eunuchs, who were only looking out for their own interests, long before Pu Yi ascended the throne. Not only did he not have proper guidance, he also inherited a mess that he had no idea existed or knew how to fix. Overall, he was really a tragic figure.

There's nothing sad, by the time of his birth, the emperor had lost all real power already, he was born into a futile life.

For comparison, try throwing a recent graduate of any hospitality course, into a real life event. All the internship attachments so on, does not count against two decades of actual battle: against the funny guests. The veteran part time server can take over a new manager at any time 😂😂😂

More than a tutor, Johnston befriended the isolated adolescent. In his account of his time at the Forbidden City, Johnston notes the rampant corruption of the imperial household, with eunuchs selling off dynastic treasures. He obtained a bicycle and telephone for Pu Yi, and against the wishes of the retainers, much-needed spectacles. 😥so sad

I think Johnston wanted to help Puyi, but he was overly idealistic. China was changing faster than the Qing court could tolerate or appreciate. Johnston like Zheng Xiaoxu was also pro-Japanese and encouraged Puyi to trust them. Which is bizarre given China's loss of Korea as a vassal to Japan in 1895. When Johnston tried to get Puyi asylum at the British embassy in 1924 it was too late. Puyi had already fallen under the influence of Japanese officials. I also believe they stopped speaking after that.

@@ijunkieNo, they kept seeing each other until Pi Yu left for Manchuria. And the British Embassy told Johnson that they had no interest in taking Pi Yu (they didn't want to piss off the wrong faction in Chinese politics) unless his life was genuinely in danger, which it wasn't at that moment.

Peter O'Toole was excellent as the gentleman Sir Reginald Johnston. Johnston was later Professor of East Asian Studies at University of London; he passed away shortly before World War II.

Sometimes i wonder what if the Pu Yi accept his offer to go to British embassy for his own protection than being a puppet of Japanese. At least the British will treat him better and maybe a bargain chip if thing can easily be smooth

The best thing about this film for me , was its depiction of the reality of China in Puyi's time...The Forbidden Palace depicted here really made an impression, by the time Puyi reached of age, the Forbidden palace had become derelict, mostly abandoned with fading paint on the walls, broken pavements, and a thick layer of dust covering everything.....it had become a white elephant in terms of its upkeep..

Interesting impression, thank you for sharing. For me in Western Europe this movie offered a way to get an impression about the younger chinese history. It came into cinemas in a time when China opened the country for foreigners (and investors). Before that our perception of China was literally not existent and reduced to Mao’s communist dictatorship and e.g. the Cultural Revolution.

In this clip, the whole arrival of the new - western - tutor, Mr Johnston (Peter O’Otoole) in the Forbiden City until the middle of his first class with the adolescent ex Emperor, Pu Yi (Wu Tao). 🎬 The witty line about ‘’Mr Washington like Mr Lenin’’, initially cancelled in the shooting script, got then fortunately restored by Bertolucci….at the very last minute (last two takes)!

It would have collapsed under all that weight. A nation of billions of populations cannot have billions of differing ideas. It needs to be shaped and moulded and led by a stern authority. I don't know much about the real story of what happened, but from what I read Johnston was actually a horrible tutor and influence on Puyi. He was a political reactionary who convinced Puyi that he was entitled to rule China by divine birthright. He was a Japanese sympathizer who convinced Puyi to trust the Japanese. He taught the boy nothing useful about politics, and kept him sheltered from new ideas to the point where he was completely ignorant of and confused about basic ideologies like liberalism and Marxism.

The part about counselling him to trust the Japanese is apparently false. He outright counselled him not to take refuge in Manchuria and instead to come to the British legation, which was willing (even if not terribly enthusiastic) to host him and provide him shelter.
